This temple is located in Nala Ugrachandi, a group of small communities just beyond the eastern outskirts of the Kathmandu Valley. It honors Karunamaya, the Boddhisattva of compassion, who is also known as Lokeshwor after his Sanskrit name Avalokiteśvara. In Nepal, Lokeshwor is manifested in multiple deities who represent aspects of both Karunamaya and Machindranath. Foremost among these are Bungadyo (also know as Rato Machindranath, with temples in Patan and Bungamati), and Jamadyo (Seto Machindranath), with temples in Kathmandu, Chobar, and the site seen here. These groups of deities are worshipped by Buddhists and Hindus alike.
