Nepal Art Village - A HERITAGE SITE WE CREATE TODAY FOR TOMORROW .
We Nepalis have always had great pride in the heritage our ancestors built for us , we exhibit it with great Honor to the world , but the HERITAGE sites are only as future proof as the existence of the artists that still know and handover the skills to actually recreate them !
NAV isn't just another project it is a dream, a Vision ,of creating A HERITAGE SITE today for the FUTURE .
a sanctuary to preserve and conserve artists and skills necessary to make sure we can rebuild old or new heritage sites whenever needed !

Festival of Ghantakarna (Gatha Muga / Gathe Mangal)

The festival celebrated on Shrawan Shukla Chaturdashi by the Newar community is known by different namesโ€”Ghantakarna in general, Gatha Muga in Bhaktapur, and Gathe Mangal in Kathmandu and Lalitpurโ€”each with its own distinct legend.

Ghantakarna Legend: Originating from an ancient demon known for defiling gods, destroying homes, and terrorizing people. Effigies with large ears (symbolizing his name) are made from straw and decorated during the festival.

Gatha Muga Legend (Bhaktapur): Tells of a man who robbed the rich for the poor, denied religion, and died without proper cremation. Eventually, locals funded his funeral, showing respect for his actions. His effigy, often over 8 feet tall and complete with bells, fangs, and symbolic ge****ls, is a focal point of the elaborate Bhaktapur celebration. Scholars suggest these elements served as informal s*x education in conservative times.

Gathe Mangal Legend (Kathmandu & Lalitpur): Farmers once used demons to help in planting but couldnโ€™t sustain them with food. The demons turned violent, prompting the villagers to drive them away. Rituals like hammering iron nails into doorways symbolize protection from evil.

Despite the varied legends, all versions culminate in the burning of effigies in rivers or crossroads at sunset, accompanied by victory chants, face washing for purification, and sometimes communal feasts, symbolizing the triumph over evil spirits.
