The striated caracara, also known as Forster's caracara, is a Near Threatened bird of prey of the family Falconidae, the falcons and caracaras. It is found in Tierra del Fuego and the Falkland Islands. In the Falklands it is known as the Johnny rook, probably named after the Johnny penguin.
The colourful growth you can see in the fore- and background is the "Falkland orange lichen" the common orange lichen (Xanthoria parietina) that coats the rocky coastlines of the Falkland Islands.

The Society of Photographer's Monthly Competition of July gave me a "Highly Commended" in the category "Travel". The shot is from Volunteer Point at Falklands, 13th January 2026.
