A local project I'm involved in allowed me to meet this very lovely lady from Syria yesterday. Why not take a look at the page and read some of the stories there? =D

We meet Zewa Youssef, a 23-year-old new mother and recent Kurdish immigrant from Amuda, Syria, in a bustling café in central Stavanger accompanied by her adorable four-month old daughter Emma. Soon it becomes clear that Emma will be raised and grow up in Norway while Syria will hopefully be a fond place to go back to regularly to visit family and friends.

Zewa begins her story by revealing that her husband Johan is the main reason she came to Norway. They were introduced to each other over six years ago by both sets of parents who were acquaintances. It was a semi-arranged marriage: ´semi´ because Zewa did actually have the choice to decline her parent´s suggestion. Johan and Zewa never met in person but overtime managed to get to know each other and built up a relationship via Skype and email. In the course of this courtship, Johan left Syria after serving in the military and he moved to Norway. After two years of living in Norway, Johan was permitted Norwegian residency due to the conflict in Syria.

Zewa and Johan were however able to keep contact all the time and in 2013 they decided to get married. It was impossible for Johan to travel back to Syria for the wedding, thus arrangements were made to get married in Turkey. Unfortunately, the newlywed couple had to begin their married life living apart in separate countries. Zewa's application to move to Norway had not yet been accepted and so their long distance marriage began with Johan returning to Norway and Zewa to her family in Syria.

Then, as is now, the region where Zewa comes from was in constant fear of attacks. Her father managed to keep his job as a mechanic but her younger brother and sisters were not able to go to school anymore due to the conflict. Zewa wanted to be with her husband and took the courageous decision to flee the country. Together with her brother, they first traveled to Turkey before continuing onto Germany. From there, anxious to meet up with Johan, Zewa traveled by herself to Norway. She arrived in Oslo in December 2014 and spent the first four months in an asylum center before approval to stay was granted. She was finally able to move in with her husband in Stavanger in April 2015.

Zewa knows her way around and is happy to live in Stavanger, even though it is very different from where she comes from. She has attended Norwegian lessons for one year and will continue after her maternity leave. After her graduation, she looks forward to having the chance to continue studying again. When she fled Syria she had the foresight to bring with her the papers documenting her two years at college studying biology. She is hoping that she will be granted an exemption from the biology subjects already passed and aspires in the future to become a pharmacist. Baby Emma will go to barnehage (Norwegian daycare) when she turns one year, maybe one day followed by a brother or sister.

Zewa´s main wish is for Syria to become a safe, flourishing country again like the beautiful community she remembers before the war. This wish is driven by her constant worry for her family’s safety with the hope that one day, they too can enjoy a safe and happy life again. To distract her mind from her worries, Zewa loves to play her violin, her one real passion. It would be a dream to continue her violin lessons but unfortunately she is too old for the ´kulturskole´ and private lessons are not within reach at this moment.

Pleased to meet you, Zewa!
