Weekly Prime – Week 21 | 20mm

This weekly prime is from last week’s Iceland trip. Obviously Iceland is full of amazing compositions so it’s almost tricky to get one wrong!
With the width of the 20mm it gets everything, so positioning is important. In this case a little hop over a bit of rope closing a walkway that led to a small ledge under the tourist bridge provided that perfect position.

There was a lot going on here in a good way. Ice-crusted rocks framing both sides, that ridiculous blue water cutting back through the middle, the falls in the background, hills beyond. The wide angle just pulls it all together nicely.

Shot at f/4.0 to keep sharpness across the whole frame without going so tight that the sky lost any character. 1/640s was fast enough to hold some texture in the moving water rather than smoothing it all out. ISO 200, good light, no excuses on that front at least.

Great location, genuinely wild conditions, and very average photography. One mistake at a time.

So yesterday in a little cafe in Stokksnes, Iceland near the Vestrahorn mountain, I saw a camera on a table near our group, I assumed that this was someone 'reserving' their table.
After about 30 minutes no one had sat there, so I grabbed the camera to hand it in and to my shock and awe.........
It was a Hasselblad X2D with 90 lens.

For the uninitiated.... See the below screenshot. A camera system that cost more than my car sat on a coffee table!

Obviously I did the important things...... Held it, marvelled in its magnificence, handed in to the cafe staff, then cried about having morals.

Hopefully Karma is smiling on me haha! Whoever, you are, I hope you got your camera back!

Shot today at the Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon, Iceland, three edits of the same shot. Same file. Same moment.

Right- what the camera recorded. No interpretation, just data.

Middle - what Lightroom's auto function thought looked good. Clean, bright, perfectly acceptable.

Today we drove from Selfoss to Katla via the secret lagoon and seljalandfoss.
Turns out the snow storm warning in place was completely justified.
Three hours of rather tasty driving later, we arrived!

Right. Norway/Finland dump incoming. January at 70°N - Skjervøy to Kilpisjärvi. Five albums of random stuff over the next few days. Orcas, auroras, frozen lakes, whatever. Not organised because I didn't shoot it organised. (Any organisation was down to Junior not me!)

This week's prime comes from Nashville at Heart's gig at Athena Leicester on 1st Feb.
Live music photography is a proper baptism of fire when you're still learning. You can't control the lighting, you can't ask people to hold still, and you definitely can't go back for a reshoot if you mess it up.

I switched between the 20mm, 35mm, and 70-200mm throughout the night depending on what I was trying to capture. The band was about 8-strong, so there were plenty of wider ensemble shots, but this moment caught my eye, just these two musicians locked into their performance.

At f/2.2, I'm letting in the stage lighting while keeping both of them reasonably sharp. 1/100s freezes the movement without pushing ISO too high. At 1600, the A7 III handles it well enough that I'm not fighting grain in post.

Today’s Weekly Prime is from my recent Arctic adventure again, and once again the 20mm prime earned its place.

This was taken while travelling from Norway to Finland. We didn’t really plan on stopping anywhere in particular, mainly because most of the roads had no proper stopping places thanks to the 4–6ft of ploughed snow piled up along the edges. So when we did spot a small opportunity, we took it.

Junior walked back down the road to frame something he’d noticed as we pulled in. I looked at the waist-high snow between the lay-by and the edge of the fjord and thought, f**k it. It turned out to be well worth the wading, as you can see.

There was a lot going on here in a good way. Snow, ice, rock, sky, a cabin, trees. Plenty to work with for a half-decent composition.

Shot at f/11 to give a nice deep depth of field, with the ISO creeping a bit higher than ideal and the shutter speed adjusted to balance things out.

More great locations, great experiences, and very average photography. And honestly, I’m fine with that.
