I set my alarm for 2am and crawled out of my sleeping bag. I planned to force myself to take a few photos while the Milky Way was in the right place before retreating back to bed. One thing led to another, and I ended up spending the whole night shooting different places around the valley. So much of landscape photography is about catching a quick moment in time, but on a clear night, there is no rush at all so you can take your time to capture the stars.

Don’t bother checking the weather, just be prepared for everything. We had slept in the back of our van and woken up to thick fog. We had already had a few days of bad weather and I was motivated to make the most of it anyway. It wasn’t until we reached nearly the highest point of our hike that the sun finally came out, but it was sure worth it!
