In the 1920s Norway’s angstiest painter decorated a chocolate factory canteen in Oslo. Now infused with cacao powder and cigarette smoke, his friezes travel to Munch museum for public consumption

We photographed the canteen at the Freia chocolate factory in Oslo for The World of Interiors

Happy to visit a space that has been home to Edvard Munch paintings since the 1920s — workers still eat beneath them today. As the magazine writes:

"Back in the 1920s, the space was transformed with works by Edvard Munch — bringing art into the everyday lives of factory workers, who still gather and eat beneath these paintings today. It's a rare and powerful intersection of industry, culture, and daily ritual. The canteen still carries traces of its history: workers smoked there until 1995, and there is ni****ne on the paintings — perhaps even cacao powder. These paintings have shaped the room they inhabit."
