Starting today is Oslo Negativ , where my image “Opsal Janisjar» was voted in the top 5 in the Oslo Street Photography Collective exhibit and is therefore on display in large glory. The image is from my ongoing project “Norwegian Situations”.
Henrik Ibsen wrote Peer Gynt while living in Italy, in self-imposed exile from Norway, which he felt rejected him. The play is a satire over Norwegian hypocricy and lack of a real identity. In the play, Peer peels and onion but discovers that it only has layers and no core, a metaphor for his own and therefore Norway’s lack of identity and principles; he has no backbone.
This is the one quest I always come back to. I look for the core in the Onion that is Norway if you will. Nothing is more hard core Norway than Constitution Day, the 17th of May. And nothing is more 17th of May than marching brass, dressing up, drinking and chaos. That’s why this image is so important to me.
I’m proud to have «Oppsal Janitsjar» on the wall at the old National Gallery together with the rest of Oslo Street Photography Collective and all of the other, much more hard-working photographers that are exhibiting there. I am also proud to have had this image on display as part of the FRAME TOKYO exhibit in August this year.
