LEARNING MY BRAIN TO SEE AGAIN.
My way of looking for images in the woodland and forest have changed a lot, and I believe this is how we finally end up with our own style. We all want something we can call our own, and finding a photographic style has always been lurking in the back of my head at least.

Welcome to my Instagram

LIGHT IS A POWERFUL COMPOSITION TOOL.
If you've been following me for a while you know by my earlier posts that I'm a bit obsessed with light.

👉It's my most used composition tool, and my most powerful one. It's power to change a scene are amazing, but it's not always easy to work with. Still, the facination for it has pulled me back in every time I've drifted away.

👉How I use the light has changed significantly as I've been evolving as a photographer. From being more like an ad on to my composition, to the main ingredient of my images.

👉I like to think that by changing how I use light, my images has evolved for the better. Looking back on my earlier work, there's been a transition from using light as a focus tool, to draw the viewer to certain objects in my composition.

👉Now I use light to transfer the emotions I feel when I'm building my composition. It's not concentrated on specific objects, but incorporated into the whole image.

👉It's like photographing a feeling, something elusive and untouchable. You see it, you even feel it, but obviously you can't touch it. I want to pass on that emotional touch that made me make the image.

👉I grew up in a forest and woodland environment, and the relaxing and emotional memories might have q a huge advocate for my chosen approach to photography.

👉Even with so much woodland and forest around me, it's never easy to find a composition, there's no guarantee that I find anything, so I've become used to not getting any images.

👉Still, the excitement I have searching for new compositions more than compensates for the hikes without images, it's just make it harder to share new images with You.

CONTROLLING CHAOS.
One of the problems I have with my Woodland and forest photography is the undergrowth. Most of the surrounding woodland and forest here are untouched, apart from the paths. So, if I don’t want the path in my composition, I have to find a way to make the undergrowth disappear.

👉I’ve tried to “use” it in my compositions a few times, but the images get too messy, and since I like my images to have a feeling of peace and quiet, the undergrowth needs to go. It’s not like I want to cut, or break any branches, that’s a BIG NO, NO!

👉I’m a “Leave it better” kind of guy, with a big thanks to . I’m a huge fan of his work, and his mind set. If you’ve not heard of him, please look him up, I love his work!

👉I’ve no problem using Lightroom, or photoshop to process my images, neither to remove unwanted stuff from my images, I just don’t want that to be the “only” solution. Working my composition trying as many camera positions as possible have granted me many beautiful images not needing anything removed in post-processing.

👉By taking my time working the composition I’ve manage to get new options for that composition, with different light, different look, or different focus point, so it’s worth the effort. It’s always nice to have a few extra images after a long day out with your camera. They might not be perfect, but They might be good enough.

👉But sometimes it’s just not possible to find a “clean” shot, no matter how much you try, and in those cases it’s nice to know what’s possible in post-processing. Always remember; you’re the only one who decides what you’re doing when you process your images. It’s your work, your Art, your mind.

👉Before I decide to remove anything from my image, I try everything else I’ve learned, like using a different crop, adjusting light and shadows, or adjusting colors. Removing is the absolute last option.

👉I love these small spots of light, and I’m obsessed with the contrast between the light and the shadows, even the change in color and contrast makes images like this my most enjoyable images to capture.

👇Please let me know if You feel the same👇

MY OTHER KIND OF PHOTOGRAPHY.
It's hard to overlook the amazing details, and colors we can find in flowers. Ever since we bought our house, we've agreed about having as little as possible of grass.

👉We've been planting trees, and making beds for our flowers ever since. Always tried to have different flowers than our neighbours, just to make it more exciting, and interesting.

👉This year I've been so caught up at work, that my woodland photography hasn't been as often as before. Even my flower photography has been almost non existent, and that's no good.

👉I've made a few flower images, but not nearly as much as I should have. I've also been a bit afraid of sharing them in my feed, as I obviously built my account around woodland and forest images.

👉Woodland and forest photography is still closest to my heart, so my images, and feed will still be about woodland and forest, but, maybe a flower image once in a while doesn't hurt.

👉It's not always easy for me to get out into the woodland and forest, some days walking isn't a choice, and those days I usually end up in our garden looking at the flowers.

👉Photographing flowers makes those days a bit easier to deal with, and even though it's not my usual kind of photography, I still have to work on the composition.

👉I find it really challenging to find the right balance between the sharpness and the "blurry" parts of the image. Beside the light, I believe depth also plays a huge role in making an image "complete"

👉Photographing small objects like flowers doesn't give you as much room to play with as a woodland image regarding the depth, but it's not impossible, it just needs some practice.

WOODLAND PHOTOGRAPHY, WHY?
With the Norwegian landscape just outside my front door, from the sea, along rivers, pass waterfalls, all the way up into the high mountains. i chose woodland and forest photography.

It might look a bit strange, and honestly, I did wonder myself in the beginning. I've always been drawn to the big outdoor, wildlife, woodland, and the mountains. I grew up on a fram surrounded by woodland and mountains, it was my playground when I was a child. That interrest have been following me my whole life, and still lurch inside me.

Due to health issues I've had to do some changes regarding long hikes up in the mountains have become too difficult now. Still, I have to get out into nature, and photography gave me that excuse, and driving force to get up and out.

Woodland still surrounds my home, and there fore with in practical reach, so the choice wasn't particularly difficult. With the demand for result, both privately, and at work, having a place to recharge your mind and soul, have become mandatory if you want to keep up with the fast changing life we try to balance nowadays.

That constantly nagging of not being around, not giving 100% of yourself 24/7, tears down everyone, no matter how strong we are. It seem like trying your best, isn't good enough any more, and sadly, that destroy so many life, that could have been saved with some understanding, and healing options.

Woodland photography have become my kind of healing, and the most likely the savior for my sanity. That doesn't mean I'm 100%, but at least I'm not jumping in front of any train soon. It's like a Lighthouse in the fog, giving me direction to safer ground.

The peace and quiet have become my medicine to battle my demons, and a way to channel both my frustration, but also my creativity. The amazing response I've got from all those who decided to follow me on Instagram have been a huge support, something I never dreamed of when I shared my first image on social media.

It might sound strange, but I've never got the hang of this Facebook part of social media, I guess I'm too old for it. But I'm told that I should share more on Facebook too, so if anyone here find woodland and forest photography interesting, and maybe find it ok to read a few words that follow alongside my image, don't hesitate to follow.

If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask, I'll try to answer as best as I can.

PHOTOGRAPHING FEELINGS
👉Over time, as I have been photographing woodland and forest, there’s always been a question way back in my head, why? I’ve never given it any more thoughts, just kept on chasing light, and making images as they unfold in front of my camera.

👉Lately I’ve been going through my images, beside a few words now and then, photography has become my major way of expressing myself. It’s my way of dealing with thoughts and problem that pop up through my life. We all have happy day, and we all have bad days. My images seem to reflect these ups and downs I encounter, and in a strange way, help me find my way through the maze of life.

👉I hear a lot of other photographers talking about “finding your own style”, “make your work stand out.” YES, I would love to have my own style, and YES, I would love to have my work stand out among all others work! Honestly, I don’t feel I’ve found any kind of personal style, and I’m sure my work doesn’t stand out among others work.

👉Does this bother me? No, as long as I love photographing woodland and forest, and I find my images good enough the share with you, I’m fine. Of course, it would be nice to sell a few more images, but that’s not the reason I started photographing.

👉So, to the topic of todays ranting… photographing feelings, what do I mean with that? Well, after looking through my images I’ve noticed that very few of them have a main subject, still, strangely they “speak” to me. Of course, not for real, but they touch my feelings, and that made me wonder why?

👉I’ve chasing light from the first woodland image I made, and I believe that light is all about feeling. A strong composition should have a strong subject, I agree with that, but at the same time, don’t get hung up in this “statement”, don’t let the absence of a subject stop you from making that image. You felt something that made you stop and pick up your camera, find out what, most likely a feeling.
