Silent Ambush

A photo from Greece that matches the weather outside right now.

It shows a spider catching a grasshopper nymph.

We had a peaceful and pleasant start to the day today. I went for a lovely bike ride and took a few photos before the rain arrived.

Fortunately, very little rain is forecast for the coming week. If only it would get a little warmer as well, so more insects would emerge for me to photograph.

Goose Gossip

Barnacle geese (Branta leucopsis) visiting our neighbourhood last year.

Most of them breed in the Arctic, but a small number also breed on Jæren, about an hour north of us.

The Clover Specialist

A common carder bee (Bombus pascuorum) on red clover (Trifolium pratense), outside our bird station by the lighthouse last summer.

They are known for their relatively long tongues, which enable them to access nectar from deep, tubular flowers that other bees might not be able to reach. This adaptation is particularly useful for feeding on flowers like heather, clover, and honeysuckle.

The clover and many other flowers are back out there, but since this first part of the year has been much colder than last year, I haven’t seen that many insects to photograph yet (except when I was in Greece).

But today I met a fun juniper shield bug out there (einerbreitege in Norwegian), and luckily I had brought my new 100mm macro lens in addition to the bird lens.

I think we deserve some warmer weather and more insects soon. It was so fun using both my 100mm and 300mm lenses on them in Greece last month, both of which are new since last summer.

As if on cue

As I was sitting at our bird station by the lighthouse today, writing the log, I found myself wondering how long it might be until I record a new bird species for our island and the station this year, given the quieter summer period and breeding season.

I had barely finished the thought before a red crossbill (Loxia curvirostra) appeared and perched in the top of a tree, becoming this year's first record for both the bird station and our island- and my 135th species of the year out here.

It looked almost identical to this one, which I photographed on our island a few years ago.

Wingbeats

A female common kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) and a stock dove (Columba oenas), photographed at Yorkshire Photography Hides near Bradford and Leeds 1.5 weeks ago.

The kestrels had five large chicks in a nest box in the background, almost ready to fledge. I see that visitors there now have photographed the chicks gathered together on this log.

Little Lapwing

Even though we have many northern lapwings (Vanellus vanellus) breeding in our neighborhood, I rarely see their chicks.

They are (luckily) good at hiding, although their parents make a lot of noise if anyone gets too close.

But one month ago, I spotted this one near the dirt road I was cycling along and took a few quick photos before leaving them alone 🥰

Field Feast

A month ago, I found the municipality's second-ever pair of Eurasian dotterels (Eudromias morinellus) on a field in the neighbourhood.

I was also involved in finding the very first pair, together with a birdwatching friend, even closer to our house two years ago.

On both occasions, they gave me many wonderful photo opportunities before moving on a day and a half later.

This is the female. In this species, the females have the brightest colours and the most striking plumage- the opposite of most other bird species. The more brightly coloured male is the one responsible for incubating the eggs and looking after the young.

European bee-eaters (Merops apiaster) in Greece, two weeks ago.

One of my very last photos of them, taken on our final day in the tent photographing these beautiful birds.
