A Rose for the King ♡

A rose for our dear, kind, warm-hearted, funny and exceptional King Harald, who passed away this morning.

Many call him the grandfather of the whole of Norway, and I agree.

May he rest in peace.

It is quite a coincidence that I happen to be on the train to Oslo today, where I haven’t been in a very long time, and that my hotel is only 1 km from the Royal Palace. There will probably be a very special atmosphere in the city in the days ahead.

But I am sure our new King Haakon will be just as good a representative of our beautiful country.

Singing in the Green

A video clip from last spring, of a male European pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) in a forest in town.

Today I found two of them at our bird station, even though most of us had given up hope of seeing them out there this year. It had been two years since they were last seen out there. I got some nice photos of them as well.

I also got this year’s first flocks of sanderlings today, both for me and for the bird station (sandløpere in Norwegian).

And a birdwatching friend who came and joined me for a while, found our first common redstart out there and for our island in two years as well (rødstjert).

I also had many species in total today, in the beautiful sunshine and warm southerly winds.

An awesome end to my summer season at the bird station, before I leave for Oslo tomorrow.

The Hidden Singer

A lovely memory from last spring, when I was sitting in a hide, photographing lots of small birds and woodpeckers like this female great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major).

Suddenly the first mistle thrush (Turdus viscivorus) of spring came and sang in the background for a long time.

Jungle Gold

During my trips to Kenya a couple of years ago, it felt like there were butterflies everywhere. But I only managed to photograph 2–3 of them, and the photos didn’t turn out very well. Most of them were either busy flying, or rather shy.

But here is one I found around the camp - a noble swallowtail (Papilio nobilis).

It is one of the very many African swallowtail species.

In Transition

A northern diver/common loon (Gavia immer) moulting into its summer plumage, in our neighbourhood last spring.

They are often quick and wary, so it’s always nice when you suddenly find one right in front of you while sitting by the sea.

The 150th Arrival!

A black-tailed godwit (Limosa limosa) from the archive, photographed on Jæren, where they can be seen now and then.

Today I came across five of them on a beach in our neighbourhood. Sadly, they were quite far away in harsh light. Still, I got a good look at all the identifying features as they came flying.

It was the first sighting in our municipality in six years!

And - the 150th species on my Eigerøy island big year list! A species I definitely didn’t expect to add this year.

The Lookout

My only photo so far of the great grey shrike (Lanius excubitor), from early last spring.

It is common in Norway, and this one was photographed in our municipality, but this is the only individual I have seen (a couple of times), as well as a rare subspecies from Asia that visited Jæren the year before.

I have many better photos of other shrike species, both from Norway and abroad, but this one deserves a place in my shrike collection too.

Little Favourite

In addition to the many coal t**s I mentioned in my previous upload today, there were also plenty of willow t**s (Poecile montanus) like this one at our bird station by the lighthouse last autumn.

This isn't one of my best photos of them, but it is a nice memory of my favourite tit species, on one of my favourite locations..

The Lady in Red

The female red-footed falcon (Falco vespertinus) that stayed in the same trees on Jæren for 3.5 weeks this June.

(Facebook is what ruins the quality of the background here.)

We saw her many times, as she was easy to spot in her favourite trees and bushes from the main road, while driving by for errands on Jæren.

I had only seen a male of the species in Norway before, in southern Norway last year. Otherwise, I have seen a few in Greece. Beautiful birds.

They are rare visitors here, and the core breeding populations are heavily concentrated in Hungary, Romania, Ukraine, and southern Russia, with smaller groups extending into Belarus, northern Italy, and as far east as northwestern China. They winter in Africa.
