The two avalanche shelters at Dyrskar and Pepparstein are located just a couple of kilometers apart. This stretch is one of the most exposed to the elements on Haukelifjell, and the shelters have rightly been described as «survival shelters.»
The shelters are situated on the highest section of the old national road across Haukelifjell. Since the construction of the new road—which features tunnels—this route is open only during the summer.
The Old Haukeli Road was a vital link between Eastern and Western Norway, crossing the Hardangervidda plateau at Haukeli. Built in the 1870s and 1880s, the road followed the *chaussée* principle, integrating the route into the landscape using retaining walls, culverts, and stone bridges. The ideal design featured a dry roadbed and gentle gradients, ensuring good accessibility for the vehicles of that era.

Yesterday, in the rain, I took a trip up to the Gaustadtopp area, but instead of hiking to the summit, I went the opposite way and enjoyed a lovely walk in the high mountains 😊
