She is overwhelmed with happiness. Engaged in Amsterdam! It was her exciting work trip to Amsterdam from USA, and her boyfriend had told her a few days ago he would come over for a weekend too. He proposed on the boat Bow’s Journeys - Amsterdam Canal Tours on the widest canal under the Skinny Bridge (Magerebrug) with all the boats around tooting and people shouting congrats to the happy couple. She cannot believe how great and fun it was! Ten years together. She had a feeling it would happen at some point, but never knew when. Thus she was literally trying to dress up every time they were out … just in case. The engagement would not change anything in their lives, but to give her a diamond ring and to plan a fun party together (probably next year), was always a sweet way for him to say “I love you” again. Why not in Amsterdam after all?

Saturday. Just after midday and getting a bit hotter than expected. The couple is sitting at the edge of a pond in the super crowded Vondelpark in Amsterdam. They have been 5 years together and just yesterday flew from the USA here. It is not their first time in Amsterdam, they were here before and fell in love with the city. They have just taken pictures of each other and are waiting for a digital Polaroid camera to print the last one out. They burst into giggles. Then he stands up, goes down on one knee and gets the ring out.

On his wedding day, Rik made quite a speech. It was super witty. He put it simply. Nicole is the only one who makes him happy, and vice versa. Of course, Rik cannot match Nicole’s unprecedented hiking skills as her partner in crime, but with his cooking, he can certainly feed her more healthily.

So, with the matter settled, they did what any sensible couple would do: they tied the knot at a castle Landgoed Oud Poelgeest , gathering everyone near and dear. Some from just down the road, others from as far afield as Australia.

The invitation cards by GEBOORTEKAARTJES & TROUWKAARTEN gave guests their very first taste of the day, and set the tone beautifully. The wedding rings by CHARLOTTE DE KOOMEN • Goldsmith | Jewelry | Rings are gorgeous statements of love that Nicole and Nik will treasure for years to come.
The cake by Shalyn | Wedding Cake Designer in the Netherlands was enjoyed by everyone straight after the ceremony, and the catering from the castle’s own Restaurant Het Koetshuis Restaurant Oud Poelgeest was fine dining at its best, that dessert, honestly (do have a look). And when the music kicked in, DJ Milco Lodder kept the dance floor buzzing till midnight.
But my biggest thank you goes to the wonderful team at the castle Landgoed Oud Poelgeest itself, so warm, so helpful, and quietly brilliant at running the whole day to the highest standard without ever getting in the way.
And of course many congrats to happy couple! 🕺💃 You rock! 💜❤️

It was a cracking wedding, especially with such beautiful couple, and joyful and friendly guests. The wedding day commenced bright and early at eight in the morning, with the bride looking exceptionally beautiful in her wedding dress from De Bruidsmarkt and ready to meet her groom for their “first look.” Need to mention that a fantastic friend of Eline, and their videographer van Paauw Productions was covering every second of their perfect day! After a brief detour to the tulip fields in the vintage sports car, the couple gathered everyone for a lovely spot of lunch at De Engelenbak in Leiden.
Once the food was sorted, and the happy crowd of families and friends have laughed and cried at the speeches, the party divided: the guests were sent off for a jolly boat trip, whilst the newlyweds walk through Leiden towards the Hortus for their photos. Eline and Mark have calculated very well the timings, and waved down to their floating guests from the bridge in Leiden and from the canal side in Hortus Hortus botanicus Leiden . Then whole congregation headed over to the Dorpskerk Zoeterwoude for the official ceremony. The music and singing during the service were truly divine. It was followed by a pleasant gathering for cake and refreshments afterwards. But of course it was not the end, and late in the evening everyone had headed to Scheltema Scheltema Leiden for a jolly party, joined by evening guests. It was friendly and happy crowd with the epic dance moves and DJ Pascalle was just brilliant. After big dance with all the guests the newlyweds gave a sudden wave and spirited themselves away into the night, bringing a spectacular end to this smashing party.💃🕺❤️💜

The perfect moment. The unexpected moment. The perfect place.
He planned the proposal very quickly—even though he had been waiting for it for more than a year. It was supposed to happen long ago, back in New York. But she turned out to be a real woman—unpredictable and beautiful in the most spectacular way. Naturally, she made unexpected plans… to move to Leiden to study.
With all the overwhelming “let’s move to Europe” chaos, there was never a perfect moment to propose. So there he was, stuck in a long-distance relationship, waiting and working in the USA, counting miles and time zones like a pro.
After a few trips back and forth—and once the ring was finally custom-made (featuring, of course, the biggest diamond ever)—he decided enough was enough. No more waiting. In just a few days, he planned everything.
We met and scouted the location on the very day he arrived. The perfect moment was scheduled for the next day in Leiden, under her favorite tree.
And that’s how it all ended…
—or rather, how it all began.
