It's here! The Chipmunk at 80 Film is going live today at 5PM BST/12 Noon EST on the Skytrain YouTube page.
Marking 80 years since the first flight of the De Havilland Chipmunk, this piece examines the history, continued operation, and enduring relevance of one of the most widely recognized post-war training aircraft.
Through interviews with pilots, historians, owners, and operators, the production documents the aircraft’s development in Canada, its service history, and why it remains active in the historic aviation community today.
Author and pilot Ben Griffiths provides historical context on the type while reflecting on his own experience flying the Chipmunk and its role in shaping his path into aviation.
The film also follows several European-based operators who ferried their aircraft back to the United Kingdom for the Chipmunk’s 80th anniversary celebrations. Their journeys included multiple fuel stops and a crossing of the English Channel at 6,500 feet before arriving at the event.
Coverage from the Flying Day at IWM Duxford includes the 18-aircraft Chipmunk Balbo formation assembled for the anniversary gathering.
Produced alongside the release of the book "Chipmunk at 80," the project combines archival imagery with contemporary photography to document the aircraft and the people who continue to maintain, operate, and preserve it today.
