FOTODOK was founded in 2008 by Femke Lutgerink and Rob Hornstra. Public Programme of lectures and events.

It began as a nomadic organisation, initiating events and exhibitions in collaboration with various partners such as: The Centraal Museum, Utrecht; Hogeschool voor de Kunsten, Utrecht; Het Utrechts Archief; and at various other public locations. In 2014, FOTODOK settled its office and exhibition space at Lange Nieuwstraat 7, opening for six months a year. Direction of work
FOTODOK’s programme is based upon four pillars. Exhibitions address socially relevant matters. Every year we put together at least two self-initiated exhibitions, both indoors and outdoors. It contains projects such as: FOTODOK Book Club, Taferelen, Female Perspective symposium, exhibition tours, and a 360 degree tour Virtual Presence. FOTODOK has three Talent Development programmes with local, national and international reaches, for artists in their first years of practice after graduation: Lighthouse, mentoring about 10 artists after their graduation from Dutch academies; Blurring the Lines, supporting over thirty international graduates; and Take Off, a digital meet-up for graduates across Dutch academies. Through our Education initiatives we encourage children and teenagers from the province of Utrecht to experience photography. We produce educational projects that range from long-term collaborations with schools in the province to workshops at our own location.

Emilia Martin (𝕖𝕞𝕚𝕝𝕚𝕒 𝕞𝕒𝕣𝕥𝕚𝕟) is part of “A Wider Gaze”, presented by FOTODOK at Atelier Néerlandais (Atelier Néerlandais) in Paris, in the lead-up to Paris Photo (Paris Photo).

“The Serpent’s Thread” weaves together the story of Martin’s grandmother, a textile worker in rural Poland, with fragmented histories of the Andersson sisters in Sweden. The work explores women’s textile labour as a language, a form of intergenerational knowledge, and a tool of liberation.

The loss of her grandmother’s textiles after her death connects to a wider absence of women’s knowledge and practices from the archive. Drawing on Saidiya Hartman’s concept of critical fabulation, Martin uses speculation to carry these stories forward.
Photographs, collages, archival material, and large textile prints come together in an installation that moves between image, material, and storytelling.

Emilia Martin is a Polish artist and photographer based in The Hague. Working across photography, writing, sound and sculpture, she draws on ancestral storytelling, myths and rituals to challenge the boundaries between truth and fiction and explore our relationships with one another and the more-than-human world.

In The Lilac and the Cypress, Wang Xue Sophia imagines a family graveyard that women are not allowed to enter through making a cyanotype with her mother. The work explores how three generations of women approach death.

One month to go until “A Wider Gaze” opens in Paris.

From 6–15 November 2026, FOTODOK presents “A Wider Gaze” at Atelier Néerlandais (Atelier Néerlandais), in the lead-up to Paris Photo (Paris Photo).

What does it mean to be European today?

Bringing together ten artists and photographers working across photography, video, installation, textiles, and archival materials, the exhibition explores belonging, identity, labour, migration, memory, and colonial legacies. Rather than offering a single narrative of Europe, “A Wider Gaze” brings together multiple perspectives, histories, and lived experiences.

The title draws on the Ancient Greek roots of the word Europe — eurys-ops, meaning “wide gaze.” At a time marked by division and uncertainty, the exhibition asks: can we still see beyond borders and differences to recognise what connects us?

Join us at FOTODOK on Friday, 9 October, from 17:30 for the launch of “The Shape of Our Eyes, Other Things I Wouldn’t Know” by Davide Sartori (Davide Sartori).

The book explores the relationship between Sartori and his father. Moving between their respective workplaces, the photography studio and the airport, the project unfolds through a series of collaborative attempts to build a connection.

The launch will be followed by a conversation between Davide and Guinevere Ras (Guinevere Ras), curator at the Nederlands Fotomuseum.

On Saturday, 17 October, we launch the artist book accompanying “A Spell Bundle – Manifesting Q***r Futurity”.

Bringing together words and images by Donja Nasseri (Donja Nasseri 🐊), Ebun Sodipo (Ebun Sodipo), Julius Thissen (Julius Thissen), Nayara Leite (Nayara Leite) and S*an D. Henry-Smith (), the publication extends the ideas explored in the exhibition through poetry, personal narratives, political discourse and archival research.

Inspired by José Esteban Muñoz’s “Cruising Utopia: The Then and There of Q***r Futurity”, the project considers q***r futurity as the possibility of imagining and shaping a more just, inclusive, and joyful world. In a time of increasingly fascist and anti-q***r rhetoric, imagining other futures becomes an essential act of resistance and world-building.

The artist book is co-published by FOTODOK and METEØRØ EDITIONS (Meteoro Editions). From 17 October, it will be available through BredaPhoto (BredaPhoto), FOTODOK in Utrecht, selected bookshops, and online via METEØRØ EDITIONS.

This Friday, “On Tokens and Open Secrets” opens at FOTODOK.

The images offer a look at some of the new work that will be presented as part of the exhibition.

Developed during FOTODOK’s Lighthouse 25/26 programme, the exhibition brings together ten artistic practices exploring how personal, family and cultural histories can be honoured and shared without laying our people completely bare.

Across moving image, textiles, ceramics, photography, writing and archival research, the artists reflect on care, belonging, memory and the different forms that withholding can take.

Join us for FOTODOK BOOK TALKS #47 on 21 September at TivoliVredenburg (TivoliVredenburg)!

Another book we will explore is “3,350 gr. Photographs and Letters on Obstetric Violence” by Valeria Cherchi (Valeria Cherchi).

19–10–1980 / 17–4–1981: a date of birth and a date of death, six months apart. Growing up seeing her namesake sister’s name on a tombstone, who died after being declared healthy at birth weighing 3,350 gr., spurred Cherchi’s seven-year research into obstetric violence as a widespread, unacknowledged form of abuse.

Moving between image, archive material, and letters (with texts by Anna Balogi, Elisabetta Masala, and Patrizia Quattrocchi), the book constructs a polyphonic narrative. Designed as a pocket-sized diary rather than an object of contemplation, it transforms suffering into an act of care, disrupting epistemic power structures and centering silenced experiences.

Valeria Cherchi is a Sardinian-born artist working with images and text around the “unspoken” and social justice, winner of the 2021 Premio Marco Bastianelli and exhibited internationally at Georgetown University Art Galleries, Galleria d’Italia Torino, Melkweg Gallery, and others.
