Florence Awakens...
In the early morning, even before the sun rises above the Tuscan hills, Florence is bathed in the deep blue of the blue hour. The city is still quiet and the first signs of a new day are only just beginning to show. At the same time, thousands of lights are aglow in the streets and along the River Arno. Florence Awakens captures precisely that special moment when night and day meet.
From a high vantage point, Florence unfolds as an impressive panorama. The Arno winds its way through the historic city centre, forming a natural thread running through the scene. The illuminated bridges and quays are softly reflected in the dark water, whilst the countless points of light emphasise the city’s vast expanse.
The undisputed centrepiece is the imposing dome of the Duomo. The warm, golden light of the cathedral forms a beautiful contrast with the cool blue hues of the early morning. In the background, the Tuscan hills stand out darkly against the sky, which is slowly growing lighter.
It is precisely the transition between the warm artificial light and the cool morning light that gives this photograph its unique character. The image feels at once tranquil, atmospheric and grand, as if Florence were standing still for just a moment before the city begins a new day.
