Today a Then & Now that was used in the magazine 40-45 Toen en Nu no. 204 page 22, the old ‘After the battle’.

Magazine caption: Various stories circulate regarding both the outcome and the cause of the shooting. According to one version, the event in this photo was the cause of the incident: the arrest of two Germans at the corner of Spuistraat and Paleisstraat,
one of whom was reportedly shot on the spot. This version is certainly incorrect, as there are images showing them being
taken away unharmed further down the road (J.M.J. Coesel, Beeldbank WO2 – NIOD).

Today a Then & Now that was used in the magazine 40-45 Toen en Nu no. 204 page 19, the old ‘After the battle’.

Magazine caption: The same location, the sidewalk between Eggertstraat and Nieuwendijk, photographed facing east. Here the bodies of a number of fatal victims were laid out. The man lying in the foreground, with his feet crossed, is presumably BS (Binnenlandse Strijdkrachten , Home Guards) member Boogaard (J.W. Hofman, S.A.).
Below: The facade still looks exactly the same. A clothing store is now housed in the SS Nebenstelle building (Marc van Baasbank).

Magazine caption: From his spot in the sexton's house, Van der Randen photographed the body of a victim, just around the corner from Eggert Street.

Below: Nowadays, we see the National Monument in the background here. On the left, De Bijenkorf is still there, but the other buildings have been replaced by new ones (Marc van Baasbank).

Today a Then & Now that was used in the magazine 40-45 Toen en Nu no. 204 page 16, the old ‘After the battle’.

Magazine caption: While the exchange of gunfire between the Germans and the Dutch Resistance was still ongoing (which lasted about an hour), aid was provided to the victims, mostly by members of the Red Cross or resistance first aid posts. This photo was taken at the southern end of the Nieuwendijk (K. Taconis, NARA).

Magazine caption: From the Kriegsmarine base in the Groote Club, on the corner of Kalverstraat and Paleisstraat, German soldiers observed the scene. They
not only stood behind the windows by the
balconies, but also watched from the roof of

Magazine caption: The crowd left only a narrow passage for the vehicles. This is the northeastern corner of the Dam with the Nieuwewendijk and the western building of the ‘Ersatzkommando Niederlande’ on the right, and the Eggertsraat and the Nieuwe Kerk on the left (Ben van Meerendonk,
