When a storm meets a sunset 👀

Last Friday evening I met up with Michael van de Burgt and Dennis Borman in the centre of Utrecht for an evening of photography. I arrived around sunset, and while there was still some warm light in the sky, something else immediately caught my attention: a huge storm cloud hanging over part of the city, with rain clearly visible in the distance.

For a brief moment there was even a rainbow, but by the time I got the drone in the air it had already disappeared. What remained was perhaps even more interesting: the last colours of sunset on one side, while a dark storm front was looming behind the Dom Tower on the other 🌧️

I wanted to capture that contrast in a single frame, so I shot a vertical panorama, gradually tilting the camera to include both more of the city below and that dramatic sky above. The Dom became the anchor in the middle of it all, surrounded by Utrecht and that transition from warm evening light into the approaching storm.

By the time I finished the panorama, Michael and Dennis had arrived as well. Not long after that the remaining daylight disappeared, we packed away the drone and headed into the city with our cameras for the rest of the evening 🌃

In the middle of Paris, yet for a moment it felt anything but 🍂

During a long weekend exploring abandoned places across northern France with two friends, the Petite Ceinture was one of the locations I had been looking forward to most.

Once part of the railway network surrounding Paris, sections of the line have been left unused for years. Down between the old walls and tunnels, the city quickly seems to disappear as nature slowly takes over the tracks. With the autumn colours at their peak, it was a great place to wander around, explore and photograph🍁

I had seen plenty of images from this place before, so finally getting to experience it myself — and finding my own way of capturing it — made this one a memorable stop during the trip 📸

A small find after a change of plans 🦋

We had driven up into the French Pyrenees that afternoon to hike towards a mountain lake. About 500 metres into the walk, a thunderstorm started rolling in and we decided it was probably wiser to turn around ⛈️

After making our way back down the long mountain road, we eventually stopped near a small bridge over a river. I wanted to have a look at the river before getting the FPV drone out, but while walking through a small patch of vegetation next to the road, I spotted this butterfly.

So before the drone ever left the ground, the camera came out first 📷

Not quite the photograph I thought I’d be making that afternoon, but definitely worth stopping for.

This wasn’t the waterfall we came for 🌿

We passed this small stream on our way to a much larger waterfall further along the trail. It was already an interesting spot on the way up, with the water running down the hillside through what almost felt like a tunnel of green, but we decided to keep walking.

A few hours later, on our way back, the scene had changed. Warm light was now finding its way through the canopy and onto the water, rocks and vegetation below. This time there was no reason to keep walking 😉

I first photographed the stream from the small bridge crossing it, which gave me this view straight into the flow of the water. Afterwards I made my way down towards the stream itself to look for a few more compositions from water level 📸

Those photographs might make their way onto here another time.

For a while, I had this part of the beach almost entirely to myself 🌊

It was late in the day, not long before sunset, and there was very little happening around me. I wanted to keep that sense of space and quietness in the images rather than filling the frame with too many elements.

For the first image, I kept the composition wide and placed myself in the frame. The small figure gives a sense of scale, but also emphasizes just how empty that stretch of beach was.

The second image focuses on one of the few things that was constantly moving: the waves breaking around the wooden groynes. From directly above, the straight lines of the structures create a nice contrast with the much more irregular shapes of the water and foam.

I pushed the colour grading a little further than I normally would with these images as well, using the contrast between the warmer tones of the sand and the cooler tones of the sea in an experiment based on colour theory 🎨

A foggy morning at the Grevelingen 😶‍🌫️

These were exactly the conditions I had been waiting for at this location.

Normally there’s quite a lot going on in the background here, but the dense fog reduced the scene to just a few shapes and reflections. So I grabbed my camera, tripod and ND filter and spent the morning looking for different compositions around the jetty.

For most of the images I used a 6-stop ND filter to extend the exposure and smooth out the water, making an already quiet scene even simpler.

Some locations only work under very specific conditions 😶‍🌫️

This jetty at the Grevelingen is normally surrounded by a busy recreational area. But on this morning, the dense fog erased almost everything beyond a few metres.

The distractions disappeared 🌫️

All that remained were a few simple shapes, soft reflections and endless shades of grey.

Because the fog had already taken most of the colour out of the scene, editing this series in black and white simply felt like the most natural choice.It wasn’t about creating a different mood, but about staying as close as possible to what I experienced that morning.

This was the moment I had been hoping to find for years 🏭

Every time I walk into an abandoned factory, I secretly hope to see beams of light cutting through the dust-filled air. Most of the time, the conditions just aren’t there.

This time, they were 🤩

I found the composition almost immediately, but the light hadn’t reached the spot where I wanted it yet. So I set up my camera and waited.

For nearly half an hour 🕣

Slowly, the sun moved across the roof until the beams finally touched the floor exactly where I had imagined them. That was the moment I stepped into the frame and took the photo.

Sometimes the image isn’t about being in the right place at the right time. It’s about recognizing the potential of a scene and giving it the time to become what you already envisioned.

Earlier that morning, I was photographing a butterfly in this valley. But instead of heading back, I decided to keep exploring. That turned out to be the best decision of the morning.

Because I didn’t know the area yet, I wasn’t looking for a specific species. I simply slowed down and paid attention to whatever caught my eye. That’s when I spotted this mayfly, something I’d never photographed before.

By then, the sun had finally climbed above the mountain ridge. Warm morning light started filtering into the valley, giving the background a soft golden glow while the mayfly remained perfectly still on a single blade of grass.

Sometimes the best thing about visiting a new location is that you don’t know what you’re supposed to be looking for.
