When we think about Svalbard (or Spitsbergen) we typically think of harsh conditions, ice bergs, polar bears, walrus and so on.

But we were just sifting through some photos taken by Jeroen Barnes on a particularly calm day and noticed how beautiful and near perfect some of the reflections are.

Don't worry, we also have some wildlife photos that we'll share with you soon 🐻‍❄️ 🦭. But for now, enjoy these embodiments of peace and tranquility.

Sound on for 30 seconds of ice & ocean 🔊🧊🌊

Our most recent trip was a little different from what we're used to here in the Arctic, with more days at sea and fewer landings, but that's because we had our sights set on reaching the 83° parallel --- and we achieved it!

We then moved from East to West through the pack ice where took the chance to use her Osmo Action 6 to capture some footage of Hondius showing off her ice-strengthened capabilities, filmed through the bullnose at the very tip of the bow.
We spent several days in the ice, but here's just a glimpse 🎬

Usually when we edit pictures of icebergs and glaciers we try to make the snow crisp and white and the ice blue and deep.

The 3rd photo however told us a different approach was needed to capture this dying glacier. No longer an imposing wall of ice, the glacier is now reduced to exposed rock and meltwater streams.

This season especially we have noticed how far some glaciers have receeded.

This ridge took 10 million years to build itself in stripes.

In East Greenland you'll find the Devil's Castle — a mountain that wears its entire geological history in bands of red, gold, and grey, each layer a different era laid bare by ice and time. Swipe to pan across the whole ridge →

We have chased landscapes across Svalbard, Antarctica, and now this — and Greenland still stops us in our tracks more than anywhere else.

Just back from two months sailing around Svalbard. Going back through the wildlife shots from the trip, I kept running into a different kind of photogenic subject — the food our chef Bawa (.bonappetit) was putting out from a galley that rocks with the swell.

Beyond running the galley day to day, his background as a pastry chef really showed. Proper desserts, in the Arctic, on a moving ship — I'm still trying to work off the results.

Good food does something to a crew. It shows up in how a team looks at the end of a long trip — salt-crusted and still smiling. Thank you Bawa, and thank you to the whole team.

Built like it's to scale, moves like it's never done this before — meet the Svalbard reindeer. 🦌
Smaller than any reindeer you've seen. They carry extra fat and a low center of gravity to survive winters most animals wouldn't. On the tundra at Alkhornet they mostly look like they're having a bad day — but that "clumsy" build is precisely what keeps them alive up here.
I sat with this one for the better part of the morning's landing. Swipe for the itch, the tongue, and the sprint that followed. 😂
Save this for your Svalbard packing list — Alkhornet is one of the easiest wildlife walks on the archipelago.
