In early September, we were supposed to hike the Bärentrek from Meiringen to Adelboden, but a heavy snowstorm with snow dumps at some places of 1 meter made us stop after two days. There were no more visible trails and risks for avalanches above 2000m. Despite this, we had an excellent adventure hiking in the snow until 2000m, and I could take some rare images that you would expect in winter, but not in September.
The Bärentrek is part of the Via Alpina, which is a long-distance hike of 2000 km long and crosses the entire Alps. The most beautiful section in Switzerland passes along the Jungfrau Region and is called the Bärentrek. Famous villages along the Bärentrek are Grindelwald, Wengen, and Murren. The main attraction is to take the train up the Jungfrau (4.158m). Even in September these places are bombarded by many (mainly Asian) tourists with selfie sticks. But most tourists will not get off the paved roads, so after 5 minutes of hiking, you are alone with some like-minded hikers.

PS: Since we were ultra-light, I took all the pictures taken with my iPhone.

In September, our youngest daughter and I hiked the “Tour des Combins” (TDC). This is the little sister of the Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB). The TMB is arguably the most famous trek in the Alps and has become a mass tourism destination, especially for non-European guided groups. So we chose the TDC, which also passes through Switzerland and Italy and is beautiful but without the endless crowds. I realize that by posting this on Instagram, there is a risk that many more will do this hike. Fortunately, I have a few followers.😉

PS: On this hike, we went “ultra-light,” so I did not carry a professional camera, only an iPhone 15 Pro Max (three lenses!). I tried to get the maximum out of the camera. I hope you like it.

During the Alaska expedition this summer, this was a tricky shot to make lying in a snow cave next to a streaming river. Needed to take several shots to get it right.

Glaciers are disappearing. I had the privilege of photographing majestic ice masses in Alaska. The size is unimaginable. Nature is the best architect on the planet and it is worrisome that this all is about to disappear.

The hike up to the Gelten hut follows the Geltenbach River and then the trail bends to the left of the waterfall and back right to finish above the fall and continues a little longer before arriving at the hut. It is a beautiful hike with around 700m vertical. I took this image in the early morning with my drone (panorama shots stitched to each other) before we climbed to the hut.

When I was photographing this tranquil setting in the Dolomites at Passo Giau I felt to be transported into a Star Wars movie. Spaceships could land at any moment.....but they didn't. Instead, It was a marvelous sunset that nature prepared for us. And once again nature proved to be the world's best architect.

I have attached three close-ups of the original image. To appreciate all details of this tranquil landscape it should be enjoyed on a large printed canvas. If you are interested send me a DM.

Passo Giau is another famous photography spot in the Dolomites. Alta Via 1, a multi-stage hike, also passes over this pass. And the cyclists of the Giro d'Italia also climb over this pass. This image is not the classic view of Passo Giau, I had set up my tripod a bit lower down the pass pointing at Averau Peak. Look closely and you will see a ski lift.

I have attached three close-ups of the full picture so you can see the fine details. This kind of landscape should be printed in a large format to be appreciated with all its details. If you are interested send me a DM.

Alpe di Siuisi I could really recommend to spend a couple of days. Excellent hiking, biking and trail running (and skiing in winter) and of course perfect for photography. This is the classic view over the Siuisi Alm by sunset. I took the same picture at sunrise hoping for some nice fog over the alm, but it did not happen and preferred the sunset scene with its pastel colours. Three zoomed in images of the big landscape are attached.

This is probably the most photographed church in the Dolomites, the St. Johan church in the Fanes valley. Go there at sunset in autumn and wait till the sun lits the mountain range in orange and red colours and the larches are yellow.
You will not be alone though..... This location is victim of its own success and has become over-crowded. I am glad I photographed it as part of the Autumn Dolomites serie, because it is, of course such a beautiful setting. Did it, done it, but will not go back easily. Too much 'mass tourism' to our liking.

As with the other pictures in the Autumn Dolomites serie this image really comes to live on large canvas so you can appreciate the details (three attached images are zoomed in) and dream away! DM me if you are interested.
