A picture from my archives. Having the experience of Tibet in 1992, we wanted to do, see and feel something similar... We were told to get about the same atmosphere in Bolivia. Mid summer 1994 we took off.. Lots of similarities (hight, Andes, colors long hair of the women) but for the rest sooo much different... especially in the remote areas of the Andes.
While Holland had temperatures of 36 degrees C, we had to deal with the freezing cold in the south. LOVED what i saw though! At a certain moment during our journey we had a ‘day off’ in a city when i read in a book that there would be a four days long religious festival in a village 80 km’s further on in the Andes. We searched for a way to get there and found a truck driver would drive forward and back the next day. We met at the local market at 5:30 next morning. Seated on an open truck between sheep and Bolivian women with bolar hats and long braids we drove over narrow roads, saw the sun rise over the Andes, drive through tiny villages with indigenous Cechua Indians and finally arrived in the village. It was a feast for our eyes and ears. Indians traditionally dressed according their tribes tradition gathered to honor their virgin Maria making music on pan flutes, riding on donkeys through the dusty streets. It was MAGIC! In the midst of all people I saw this mother and child walking over the Alto plano. People VS Camera Fivestars_people
