[EN] Besides my winning portfolio in the Green Camera 2026 contest I had more success. My photo of a Natterjack toad in amplexus (embracing) achieved a highly commended in the category “Animals” (mammals, amphibians and reptiles). This is the nature photography contest for the Netherlands and Belgium. To ensure a level playing field, only photos captured within these two countries are eligible for entry. Originally this photo was part of the portfolio. However, this photo was a continuation of some of my older images. I wanted something new and that is how the third photo of the portfolio came to be. This image was different, also focuses on the eyes and it was a better fit for the portfolio. Sometimes, tough choices have to be made.

I am delighted to share that my photo “Shadow Guard” was awarded as a highlight (highly commended) in this year’s Glanzlichter Competition in the category “Diversity of all other Animals”.
With almost 25,000 submissions this year Glanzlichter is a very prestigious international nature photography competition. I feel privileged to travel the world and photograph many different amphibian and reptile species. However, being awarded in this prestigious international competition with a Common toad (Bufo bufo) makes it extra memorable.
I also want to congratulate all other awarded photographers!

This is what trying to be silent and excited at the same time sounds like. 😅
Last night I had an unforgettable wildlife experience! My second (!!) Kinabalu krait (Bungarus flaviceps baluensis) was climbing up the tree, branch by branch, then a Sunda pangolin (Manis javanica) appeared.
Observing a Kinabalu krait climbing up to 3 meters of the ground is a unique experience, but not the first time. The guide showed me a video of a climbing Kinabalu krait the day before.
The Kinabalu krait is highly venomous and endemic to the montane forests of Northern Borneo. This shy and docile elapid is a specialised predator that primarily feeds on other snakes and reptiles. Kinabalu kraits are usually hunting on the forest floor.
The Sunda pangolin (Manis javanica) is rare, elusive and endangered, and is the only species of pangolin found on the island of Borneo. Observing a wild pangolin was unexpected, and will be an experience that I will never forget!

Tropical montane cloud forest is characterized by low-lying clouds and high humidity, creating a unique ecosystem blanketed in mosses, lichens, and ferns, with an ancient feel and a rich biodiversity of unique flora and fauna. This beautiful habitat is home to the
Cameron Highlands pit viper (Trimeresurus nebularis). The name Trimeresurus nebularis comes from the Latin word nebularis which means “from the clouds”.

Banded krait (Bungarus fasciatus) found during a night hike in the mangrove forest. The primary prey of the Banded krait is other snakes, but its diet also includes fish, frogs, lizards (like skinks), and snake eggs. The banded krait is a nocturnal hunter, foraging for food at night and being a significant predator of other snakes in its habitat.
After finding multiple Mangrove vipers (Trimeresurus purpureomaculatus) this huge Banded krait was the cherry on the cake. The “mangrove mud” is still on the grip of my camera and on my camera bag. 😅
