Let's introduce the people who are joining me with the 'Dearest Groningen' project.

Meet Galya:

I came to Groningen in 2016, straight after highschool in Lithuania. We can say I've been here for quite awhile, I saw many different versions of what Groningen can be. One of the things that shocked me the most was of course the amount of bikes and the kindness of people. For a person from a colder land it wasn't the easiest thing to adjust to, at first I didn't understand why do strangers greet me in the street, why do I see so many smiling faces? And now, it became one of my favorite things - something that I wish every place of the world would have. It's a wonderful community.

I love seeing people helping each other, I love feeling that my opinion matters here, and most of all - I love that Groningers are so innovative, they see the world with curious eyes and open ears, it's a huge joy to share my music with them, to see their excited faces. For a musician such place is the biggest dream!

With all the gratitude for the new experiences, life changes and growth I can firmly say that Groningen will always have a special place in my heart ā¤ļø

Let's introduce the people who are joining me with the 'Dearest Groningen' project.

Meet Ajay:

Even though traveling to the Netherlands from India, especially during the Covid time was hectic, I was relieved when I reached Groningen. I knew this city would create another strong layer for my studies, career, and life. A vibrant and creative city in the north of the Netherlands. I like the diversity that you can find in Groningen and everyone is super friendly and open-minded. I mean it makes sense, it is one of the happiest and youngest places in the Netherlands. And yes, not knowing Dutch was never a problem. Everyone knows English, but I did learn a few Dutch. Dankjewel!

Exploring the city with friends or even just by yourself, this true student city has a lot to offer, that you will never get bored, which makes the city more lively. It just makes me so happy to go for a ride on my bike and travel the beautiful cities, and explore the food culture. Oh Yes, I tried the Haring! But I like Kibbeling better.

I was at my University working on a project and I looked out of the window, and it was snowing! It was the first time I had seen snow, and I immediately just shut my laptop and went out to experience it. It was beautiful. I was so elated and emotional.

By early next year, I'll be done with my Masters, and I know I'll miss this place, but Groningen will always have a place in my heart.

Let’s introduce the people who are joining me with the ā€˜Dearest Groningen’ project!

Meet Asterios:

I always knew that I wanted to live abroad at some point. Netherlands never really came to mind but here we are. Despite the difficulties of having to move to a different country what I've found here made it worth it. I've found an academic community allowing me to express myself and then a student community and friends that treated me as family. Groningen really became a second home to me, and I'll shall regard it as such

Let’s introduce the people who are joining me woth the ā€˜Dearest Groningen’ project!

Hi,
I am Alka, a PhD candidate living in Groningen since 5 years. I am from India and I heard about this project through a friend. I immediately signed up for it because Groningen has a lot to offer for everyone. This is a city known for its international students and this project acknowledges that the international community here really loves the city. They have adopted it as their own.

Meet Sarah:

I'm joining the project because I know how hard it is to get participants for studies, so I'm always up to answer questions or filling up surveys. This project was indeed more interesting, as I like to take photos as well. It was not really hard for me to agree to join! It's also about internationals in Groningen, which is as an international student, it is something that I'm relating everyday and I'd like people to see as well. Groningen is such a beautiful city with people from all walks of life, I fell in love with the city and decided to stay.

It's time to introduce the people who joined me with the 'Dearest Groningen' project!

Hey everyone, my name is Denislava but people just call me Deni.

I'm from Bulgaria and the reason I came to the Netherlands is because I wanted to study in a different environment. I'm a business student at Hanze UAS. I was really glad that I managed to get used to living in Groningen so fast and I think the new people that I met here made me feel even more welcome. Everyone here is so open-minded and friendly that you can always meet new friends. I am so excited that I'm taking part in the project Iris is having because that way Dutch people can see that we, the internationals, are actually pretty cool and fun people to talk with. To end this I would like to say thank you to everyone who visited the previous exhibition and we will see you guys on the next one! ā¤

Let's introduce the people who are joining me with the 'Dearest Groningen' project!

Meet Simona

A few years ago, when I first arrived in Groningen, I knew this is going to be my city, the city that will change my life forever...

My father and I have travelled for more than two days by car to get in the city and we were both feeling exhausted. We thought as soon as we got to my accommodation we would simply lay down on the floor and sleep, before doing anything else. It didn’t happen. For both us, feeling the Groningen air and seeing a completely new world. It gave us so much energy we couldn’t think about sleeping anymore.

It was like we were living a dream, so far away from what we were used to. Especially for me, that I was going to stay here long-term, it was simply unbelievable. As a girl coming from an extremely modest family with very limited financial possibilities, I still can’t believe it till this day. I am forever grateful for all of it, for Groningen.

This city was my best friend for almost 5 years. Whatever happened in my life, however many people came and left, this city was always here, the only stable thing in my life that comforted me in the worst times. When I feel extremely sad or lonely, I simply go for a walk through the centre and I feel alive and connected again. The city has always reminded me that everything will be alright. And that’s how it always was and it will be.

Groningen healed me, helped me grow and made it possible for me to meet people that turned into family, a loving family that I always longed for!
