Apparently I’m not the only one who starts quietly longing for autumn somewhere around the middle of summer.

For rain on the windows, muddy boots, damp horses, candles all over the place, approximately 100 different kinds of organic tea, and finally being able to pull the wool jumpers out again.

This autumn, I’d love to visit a few places across the Netherlands & Belgium for a series of beautifully simple portraits of horses and their people.

Nothing elaborate. No big production. Just quiet portraits together, in whatever autumn decides to give us that day.

€125 per combination, including 3 carefully edited portraits.

Do you know someone who would absolutely love this? Tag them below.

Can you already picture this at the place where your horse lives?

Want to organise it there? Gather a few fellow autumn people and let me know.

There is, of course, one very serious requirement:

Real wool jumpers only. 🤎

België, ik kom jullie kant op!

Op 5 september ben ik in België voor een fotoreportage en voordat ik weer huiswaarts keer, heb ik 6 september nog ruimte voor één reportage.

Wie o wie? 🤎 Ik hoor het wel!

Liefs, Katja

About a week ago, I asked if you knew someone who is quietly trying to change the horse world.

Someone choosing trust over force.
Curiosity over tradition.
Putting the horse before everything else.

I shared the post in several equestrian groups, and I wasn't quite prepared for just how many names you would give me!

232 nominations came in through those posts alone — with even more arriving in private messages.

So I'm reading every story.
Looking up every name.
And writing them all down.

One by one.

And with my weakness for fountain pens, candlelight and anything slightly Victorian… well, there was only one way to do it.

But before anything else: thank you.

Thank you for every name, every story and every message. And especially for taking the time to tell us why these people matter to you — and why you believe they're making a difference for horses.

At the end of August, we'll choose one name from this list.

In September, we'll visit them and create a complete photographic story of their work. The full collection of images will be theirs to use across their website, social media and marketing, helping their work and their story reach more people.

This is our contribution to the change we believe the horse world is ready for.

Because every shift begins with someone choosing to do things differently!

Nominations remain open.

If this is the first time you're hearing about the project, you'll find the original call on our page. Have a read — perhaps there's someone whose story you believe we should hear. ♡

Would you like us to tell the story of your equestrian business too? You can also book a complete storytelling photography session with us. Send us a DM. ♡

We are fortunate to have wild horses living nearby for us to photograph. A herd of approximately twenty Koniks, free to wander within a designated area.

And in those words lies a contradiction: free, yet designated.

The area is vast, but these horses will always encounter boundaries — some natural, others created by us. Perhaps this is as free as they can be in our small, yet very busy country.

On this particular day, the herd had gathered around the concrete water-control structure in Meinerswijk, in the floodplains of the Rhine near Arnhem. The structure we see today was built in 1966, but this landscape still carries the remains of the IJssel Line — a Dutch Cold War defence system once designed to slow a possible invasion from the east.

Nature was given more space in these floodplains in the early 1990s, and the first Konik horses were released in Meinerswijk in 1991. More than three decades later, they still roam this large nature reserve and have become part of a landscape visibly shaped by both nature and human history.

Today, mares nurse their foals beneath concrete walls, horses groom one another in the shade, and the herd wanders past graffiti left behind by the human world.

A remnant of another time, now part of theirs.

Where urban meets nature.

Every month, we'll select one inspiring person, organisation or equestrian business that's replacing expectation with understanding.

Because every shift begins with someone choosing to do things differently.

The first thing we'll do is sit down together with a cup of tea. We'll listen. Only then will we begin to tell their story through photography.

The images are theirs to use across their website, social media and marketing, helping their story reach more people. In doing so, we hope to contribute to the shift we believe the horse world is ready for.

We're looking for stories of people...

Choosing trust over force.

Curiosity over tradition.

Putting the horse before everything else.

If someone immediately comes to mind...

Tag them below.

We'd love to meet them. 🤎

Our first story will be told in September.

If you'd like to help us reach more people quietly doing things differently, sharing this post would mean a lot to us.

A few months ago, we made a decision that changed everything.

We left behind the security of our jobs to build a different kind of life.

A slower life.

One where mornings begin outside instead of in traffic.

Where our children grow up surrounded by animals.

And where photography slowly found its way back into our lives.

I'm Katja, and horse photography has been part of my life since 2004.

For more than twelve of those years, I worked for equestrian magazines while photographing horse owners, professional riders, breeding farms, and major equestrian events throughout the Netherlands and Belgium.

I loved what I did.

After several years away from photography, I found my way back behind the camera.

The horses were exactly as they had always been.

I was the one who had changed.

For thousands of years, we've asked horses to carry our dreams.

Our wars.

Our work.

Our victories.

Our ribbons.

Our ambitions.

Even our love has often come with expectations.

Perform.

Obey.

Carry us.

Win for us.

Look beautiful.

But rarely have we stopped to ask...

Who is the horse when we ask nothing at all?

That question never left me.

I stopped trying to create the image people expected.

I started waiting for the horse to show me who they already were.

That's the horse I hope you'll see through my lens.

Today, our work includes:

• Creating timeless portraits that celebrate the unique character of your horse.

• Editorial photography for equestrian magazines.

• Travelling across Europe in search of wild horses while building our Fine Art print collection.

• Sharing the stories of ethical equestrian businesses and the people helping shape a kinder horse world.
