You know them, those colorful wristbands for festivals, performances, and other events?

At the National Geographic Summit Edge of Understanding on April 21, all 700 attendees received a very special wristband. Special because it is made of h**p and has a strip of paper attached to the inside containing a bee and butterfly mix of flower seeds. How wonderful! Paper in the soil, water it, and happy bees and butterflies!

The sustainable wristband is from Plantjebandje (great naming!), which also makes keycords, lanyards and cup holders from h**p. Give nature a helping hand and choose a Plantjebandje!

What a fantastic National Geographic Summit yesterday at Muziekcentrum het IJ in Amsterdam. Themed as Edge of Understanding, it featured inspiring presentations by six National Geographic Explorers, storytellers, and researchers. With Eva zu Beck, Steve Boyes, Kerllen Costa, Justin Jin, Samuel Ramsey and Sophie Darlington.

Closing the event was Sophie Darlington, a top wildlife camerawoman and film director. She started out in Tanzania working for the world-famous Hugo van Lawick, one of my heroes. Hugo photographed and filmed in Tanzania for over thirty years, in the 60s and 70s with his then-wife Jane Goodall.

Sophie is a role model for women in wildlife camerawork. In 2025 she became member of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC), the first dedicated wildlife cinematographer invited in.

I once saw her at work in Ndutu, Tanzania, trying to film wildebeest crossing Lake Ndutu. The waiting game. I still don’t know if she succeeded. I did, with photos, not then, but in the year after.

It was wonderful that Sophie closed the Summit with moderator Alice Aedy with a toast to superwoman Jane Goodall.

Quetzal, Costa Rica.

Ter ere van 5 jaar Hollandse Waterlinies UNESCO werelderfgoed was er op donderdag 16 april een bijeenkomst georganiseerd door Stichting Forten Nederland voor de vrijwilligers van de Hollandse Waterlinies in de Grote Kerk van Naarden. Naast de start van het 5-jarig jubileum markeerde de dag ook het begin van het Weekend van het Verdedigingswerk (18 en 19 april).

Van de 900 vrijwilligers (!) waren er zo’n 300. De setting was prachtig, de burgemeester van Gooise Meren sneed de taart aan, er waren gedeputeerden om de vrijwilligers te bedanken, vrijwilliger 😉 Dolf Jansen zorgde voor een vrolijke noot, het Gouden Boekje ‘Een fort voor een vleermuis’ werd gepresenteerd en er waren meerdere mooie excursies.

Excursie uitschieter voor mij was Hemelbestormers, een bezoek aan de restauratie van de beschilderde kerkhemel. Unieke gelegenheid om van dichtbij van de schilderingen te kunnen genieten. Nog met gids te bezoeken tot 23 augustus 2026. Voor tickets zie de website van de Grote Kerk Naarden.

Not far in front of us, I saw a large bird of prey flying low towards the acacias. Another eagle, I thought. A moment later, we stood face to face with two of these beauties. Thank you Salva and Carlos, thank you Roy Safaris | Tanzania Safari Specialists, for this wonderful experience.

My mother passed away from cancer when my eldest daughter, Linde, was barely three years old.

Now Linde is almost 19 and is running a half marathon against cancer, for the KWF, for life. Will you help her reach her goal?

In juli 2021 is de Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie toegevoegd aan het bestaande Werelderfgoed Stelling van Amsterdam (sinds 1996). Samen zijn nu 5 jaar UNESCO Werelderfgoed Hollandse Waterlinies.

Hierbij mijn foto op de cover van het HW katern van Fort en Vesting 2026/2027, een gratis uitgave van . Dit jaarmagazine over verdedigingserfgoed wordt in een oplage van 50.000 exemplaren verspreid via betreffende locaties, zoals forten, vvv’s en bezoekerscentra.

Op de foto het reduit van Fort bij Vechten, met het Waterliniemuseum en het Romeinse Castellum Fectio een mooi uitje voor het hele gezin!

Wat een fantastische belevenis was dit, meerdere koningsgieren en zwarte gieren voor de vogelhut in Costa Rica.

What a fantastic experience this was, multiple King Vultures and Black Vultures in front of the bird hide in Costa Rica. In December, we will also visit this location on the photography trip with SNP Natuurreizen. Only two more participants are needed for the trip to depart.

Tarangire is a national park relatively close to Arusha. It is great for elephants, baobab trees, leopards, and birds. During the photography trip in March, we spent one night there, our last in Tanzania.

We saw many Lilac-breasted Rollers there, some very close up. A bit tight, but this one just fit in the frame.
