A ticket to see the northern lights from your airplane seat! (If you get lucky)
So that was quite the moment. This image is what you can call a bucket shot. It has been on my mind for well over 10 years when I was travelling frequently to the America’s via Greenland as a tour guide. Last night I finally got lucky on my way back from Edmonton, Canada to Amsterdam with klm Many things have to line up to get this shot. Let me explain.
- First of all you have to be on the side of the airplane where you can actually see the aurora borealis (northern lights). Left if you travel west-east in my case.
- I got the perfect seat at check-in. A window seat right above the wing to fill the frame.
- It has to be a night flight and completely dark.
- You have to get lucky with the intensity of the solar winds. Not every night there is visible activity.
- I set my alarm to wake me up at around 5 hours into the flight at the most northern and darkest part of the route.
- I got my camera, got under a blanket to cover-up as much of the window as possible. It’s super difficult to get a clean image without reflections from inside the plane at night.
- The right lens, settings and focus: 16mm at F1.4, 10 sec shutter at ISO 4000 should do the trick.
So for all photography enthousiasts out there. Your chances to see the northern lights might already start on your way to the destination from the warm and cozy airplane cabin😏
Big thanks to and for a true Canadian experience!
