A ticket to see the northern lights from your airplane seat! (If you get lucky)

So that was quite the moment. This image is what you can call a bucket shot. It has been on my mind for well over 10 years when I was travelling frequently to the America’s via Greenland as a tour guide. Last night I finally got lucky on my way back from Edmonton, Canada to Amsterdam with klm Many things have to line up to get this shot. Let me explain.

- First of all you have to be on the side of the airplane where you can actually see the aurora borealis (northern lights). Left if you travel west-east in my case.
- I got the perfect seat at check-in. A window seat right above the wing to fill the frame.
- It has to be a night flight and completely dark.
- You have to get lucky with the intensity of the solar winds. Not every night there is visible activity.
- I set my alarm to wake me up at around 5 hours into the flight at the most northern and darkest part of the route.
- I got my camera, got under a blanket to cover-up as much of the window as possible. It’s super difficult to get a clean image without reflections from inside the plane at night.
- The right lens, settings and focus: 16mm at F1.4, 10 sec shutter at ISO 4000 should do the trick.

So for all photography enthousiasts out there. Your chances to see the northern lights might already start on your way to the destination from the warm and cozy airplane cabin😏

Big thanks to and for a true Canadian experience!

Bad Gastein is something else. Dominated by hotels built 200 years ago when this region was super wealthy and famous for it’s healing waters. After WWII most buildings were abandoned which made it a ghost town. The past decade many renovations have been completed and now it’s starting to look like it did in the past. The gondola to go up the mountain leaves at the train station in the city center. Definitely consider this place if you want to combine wintersports and history. It has some of the longest ski runs that you can find👌

Ever since I can remember I have been fascinated by the cold and snow. The colder the more interesting and there can never be enough snow of course😏 These first few days here in Norway had all the ingredients for a true winter experience. Record low temperatures for this part of the country and a thick pack of snow. The minimalistic pure white and soft blue colors make everything look super fresh. That, in combination with golden hour that lasts the whole day, make it a unique place to shoot, work and have fun🙅‍♂️

March just took off and I could say there is some excitement for the coming weeks. I’ll be shooting in the mountains for about 4 out the 5 weeks to come with Austria, Switzerland and Italy on the list👌 Time sort out all the gear and hope for good snow❄️

This is a set from last year when we found some pristine powder in .bartels & are so comfortable in this terrain, which makes it a lot of fun to shoot!

Winter night scenes from the Arlberg✨It’s really impressive to see how far these tiny flying camera’s have progressed over the years. Now being able capture such great detail including all those stars in the night sky in one well exposed image.

For those who are interested:
1, 4 second exposure with 800 iso and some adjustments in Lightroom on the Mavic 3 Classic

Throwback to the first turns of the season back in December. Not much to complain about this day. Safe & excellent company with 3 local guides, perfect weather and just enough snow to stay afloat👌

Not often I have experienced conditions like this while shooting over multiple days. Three days of intense snowfall, strong winds and temperatures below -20 on the mountain. Some serious battery management had to be put in place to keep all the equipment running. After the weather calmed down we were treated with a full day of sunshine as a reward for the hard work🙏 Even though the weather was not ideal to showcase the different ski resorts, it does show how real winter looks like. For me it’s perfect and I absolutely loved it😄

Today exactly one week ago my mom passed away peacefully in our arms. She was my biggest fan here on Instagram, so it only feels right to give her some credit for supporting me unconditionally throughout my life and commenting on almost every post and story these past years😅. No matter where I was, or what I was doing. I knew she was watching and experiencing it with me.

She was the one that got me excited about adventures in the mountains from a young age. Her passion and enthusiasm for all things in nature big or small was infectious and I will aways carry a part of that in me. She was a strong, positive, woman, genuinely interested in other peoples lives and never backed down from a challenge. We both share a passion for photography and Autumn was her favorite season. She used to go on long walks next to the canal on the first photo, because she was fascinated by the intense colors. I remember when I got my first drone and she called me to up telling me that I had to fly it there. It would look amazing she said. It’s still one of my favorite images and luckily we were able to do a short walk there a few days before her passing.

I will have to get used to the idea that she will not be experiencing life with me anymore, but I’m really thankful for all the adventures and powerful moments we shared. Her passing was anticipated, so during the past months I was able to capture some beautiful moments on camera. The power of motion pictures and audio will keep a lively memory whenever I might need it.

This is also my message to you. Take you parents on an adventure, big or small. Do something crazy together. Your own loved ones might be still healthy, but you never know what can happen in the near future. Record some of those intimate moments, a laugh, a smile, or when you see they are at their happiest. It can be a video, photo or just audio from a nice conversation. It might not mean much now, but it will make a huge difference when the time is there.
