Two photographers can quote very different prices for what looks like the same photoshoot.

But the hour spent taking photos is only part of the work.

Experience, preparation, specialist skills, equipment, editing, image usage and the amount of work required after the shoot can all affect the price.

This doesn’t mean the most expensive photographer is automatically the best. And a lower-priced photographer isn’t automatically a bad choice.

The important question is whether their experience, quality and service match what your project needs.

Someone can be brilliant at capturing people and spontaneous moments but have very little experience photographing architecture or products.

A photographer’s portfolio usually shows their very best work often selected from many different shoots.

A better way to judge consistency is to look through one complete gallery from a similar assignment. For a wedding, for example, look at one full wedding rather than a mix of the best photos from twenty weddings.

Then consider whether you genuinely like their style, whether they have experience with the type of shoot you need, and how you feel when communicating with them.

The right photographer isn’t simply a good photographer. They’re the right photographer for you and your project.
