I rarely photograph people, but I couldn’t resist this scene in Eindhoven.

Huge sheets of coloured fabric were waving in the wind, making the building look almost like a temple. And there, on the steps, five men were having their lunch.

I went over for a chat and asked if they knew what the installation was about. They had no idea. They’d been planting trees nearby and had simply found a nice sheltered place to sit.

I loved the colours, the composition, and the wonderful coincidence of it all.

Sometimes a scene just comes together.

Apps made accessible through paper. How wonderful is that?

Another discovery at Dutch Design Week: SOOOT Box , a little audio device with stereo sound, streaming capabilities and a charming retro LED display.

But what really fascinated me was the interface. No touchscreen, no complicated menus. Just colourful punched cards.

Insert a card to play music or podcast, start a timer or change a setting. Flip it over for another function. You can even combine cards. Everything feels wonderfully physical and intuitive.

And then I realised: this is an old idea!

The Jacquard loom was programmed with punched cards more than 200 years ago. Dutch street organs (draaiorgels) still play music from enormous folded cardboard books with punched holes. And, of course, punched cards played an important role in the history of computing.

All different ways of encoding information through patterns of holes.

What delighted me most was that even the device’s settings could be controlled with cards. No endless fiddling through digital menus. Just pick up a card and interact with the machine.

I love this kind of design. Not technology for its own sake, but a thoughtful reconsideration of how humans interact with machines 😀

Like a bee to a flower.

At Dutch Design Week | DDW in Eindhoven, I was drawn to this large, illuminated pattern hanging high on a wall. I had no idea what it was, but I wanted to take a closer look.

That’s how I met Dutch designer Bastiaan Luijk of STUDIO BL - Bastiaan Luijk BL.

His work is inspired by phyllotaxis, the way plants arrange their leaves and seeds. Think of the spirals in a sunflower, where the golden angle (approximately 137.5°), the golden ratio and Fibonacci numbers all come together.

Bastiaan translates these mathematical patterns into lamps and furniture.

His lamps were particularly fascinating. Looking inside one, I discovered a mirrored surface that shields your eyes from the direct light while reflecting the intricate geometry of the lamp itself. Almost like looking into an illuminated tunnel.

What first appeared to be an abstract pattern turned out to be a beautiful example of how mathematics, nature and design meet.

And it all started with me behaving rather like a bee approaching a flower 🐝🌻

Crossing the Meuse by ferry, with stormy winds and almost black water.

A fugue by Bach seemed the perfect soundtrack to this dark, dramatic crossing.

Dutch Design Week | DDW in Eindhoven feels like a festival, spread across the entire city.

This is the Innovation Powerhouse, a former industrial power station.

I was particularly struck by its two enormous chimneys. A striking reminder of Eindhoven’s industrial past.
