Introducing the FUTURES Research Residency.⁠
⁠
FUTURES is launching a new residency offering dedicated time for independent research within Amsterdam’s cultural context, alongside connection to FUTURES’ international network.⁠
⁠
Based at the FUTURES Hub in Amsterdam, the residency supports artists, writers, researchers and curators working across the visual arts.⁠
⁠
The residency is deliberately self-directed. It can provide space to develop an emerging project, pursue a line of enquiry, test ideas or allow a body of research to evolve without the pressure of a predetermined outcome.⁠
⁠
Residents determine the focus and direction of their research, with accommodation and workspace in Amsterdam and connection to the wider FUTURES network.⁠

Applications are open on a rolling basis.⁠

With , we hosted for a residency at the FUTURES Hub in Amsterdam, where they developed their project "*ME(MORIES)*" During their time at the Hub, we spoke with them about this latest research project:⁠

"I'm working on a mixed media body of work that is a critical visual interrogation of the Gomesi, tracing its complex journey - from its historical inception as a school uniform and colonial blueprint, to becoming the ultimate, unyielding image of a dignified Ugandan woman." - ⁠

We’re proud to be hosting Pride Photo for a residency at the FUTURES Hub in Amsterdam. As part of this collaboration, we’re excited to welcome Papa De to the Hub, where they will be developing their project “*ME(MORIES)*”.

DeLovie Kwagala (aka Papa De) is the first openly non-binary q***r photographer from Uganda. An award winning visual artist and film maker, their art is a defiant stance against the colonial gaze, aiming to dismantle stereotypes around beauty, gender identity, and the fetishisation or victimisation of Black and q***r bodies. Through self-taught, multi-disciplinary visual storytelling, Papa De documents and archives African q***r youth, exploring themes of identity, belonging, migration, displacement, and climate justice.
