The west has enjoyed a highly privileged position in the world for centuries, and continues to dominate. Despite its current position, recent global socio-political tensions and the 2008 economic crisis have brought to the surface ways of thinking in which fear prevails. Many people are afraid of losing their jobs, their current lifestyle, and having to accommodate large numbers of refugees. Certa
in shortcomings of our current political economic system are interwoven with, or a product, of the cultural fabric of our society. From this point of view, art can serve as an important tool to raise awareness and initiate positive change to counteract the dominant sentiment of fear, both within the economy and in our society. Shifting Spaces is seeks to inspire positive change through artistic and architectural interventions, conversations and performances. Featuring a varied array of work from artists across the world, including paintings, photographs, sculptures and video installations, the exhibition examines how the art can offer both critical and positive perspectives part and fututre. The show raises questions about the role of art in creating a compassionate economy and positive future, ownership, activitsm, colonialism, climate change and human solidarity.
