Is the war really over? That is the question that photographer Julien Sunyé asks himself when he sees all the violence around him. Whether it is economic war, the civil war in Syria or climate change, Sunyé has the impression that humanity is caught in a destructive dynamic. This is despite all the annual celebrations of peace on the European continent.

He visits the battlefields of Europe to document the fragility and softness of humanity in environments where the violent past is still healing. It results in Black Holes, his second photography book, recently discussed in VPRO's show "Brommer op Zee"

Normandy, France. 2016 most probably. A foggy morning on the road from Dieppe exploring the area for sites. I’m sharing this as its one of my favorite pictures. The film grain, the flocking hay bales and the tree in the background. And of course the memories and feelings of that moment that resurge when seeing it. I’m working on a new triptych and will also be organizing my archives so stay tuned!
