Rain in Amsterdam does not belong to one season. These proposals took place throughout the year, including during tulip season.

They all have one thing in common: a plan flexible enough to change.

When the weather is safe, we can adjust the timing, route and sequence while protecting the surprise and keeping the experience natural.

We love perfect weather, but when nature decides otherwise, you need a plan prepared to move with it.

Making the most of a photography session is always teamwork.

This couple booked their Amsterdam session at the last minute. They trusted me to plan the route, guide them safely through the busy streets and find quieter places where they could relax and focus on each other.

Together, we created a final gallery of 41 photographs. After delivery, they selected the 20 images I could share publicly, while the rest remained private.

Collaboration continues even after the session. Every client decides whether their photographs can be shared and, if so, exactly which ones.

In their words: “She knows great spots that were less crowded, and the backdrops were magical. I LOVE our photos!”

Flexibility becomes part of the plan when the weather begins to change.

Today, the rain continued for more than two hours longer than yesterday’s forecast predicted. That affected the original proposal time, but because I had kept room in my schedule and the couple could adjust their plans, we waited for a dry window and moved the proposal.

When the moment arrived, everything happened beautifully. People nearby stopped to watch, congratulate them and share in their happiness. The person receiving the proposal later told me how sweet it felt to have strangers celebrating with them.

The weather did not cancel the plan. It simply reshaped it.

With a clear Plan A, an alternative ready and flexibility from everyone involved, we found the right moment and protected the surprise.

Amsterdam gave us rain, then a dry window, and one very happy yes.

The best surprise proposals feel simple because the person receiving the surprise never sees how much planning happened beforehand.

A designed proposal is not about adding as many things as possible. It is about deciding when each detail should appear, protecting the surprise and making sure the person proposing knows exactly what to do.

The planning should remove pressure, not create more of it. You should be able to focus on your partner and the words you want to say, knowing that the timing, location and people involved are already coordinated.

For this private boat proposal, I was aboard pretending to be part of the crew. After a welcome drink and approximately 15 minutes of navigating, we reached the Seven Bridges and the proposal began.

People beside the canal and aboard nearby boats cheered. Flowers were delivered to the boat afterwards, followed by portraits and a cheese platter for the return journey. At the end, I stepped away so the newly engaged couple could enjoy the final part of the boat trip alone.

Every detail appeared at the right moment while the real plan remained completely hidden.

Family photographs are not only about remembering where you travelled. They preserve who you were together at that moment.

During a family session, I photograph everyone together, but also the individual connections within the family. I use simple activities that encourage you to talk and interact with each other, rather than perform for the camera.

I love that these photographs allow everyone to remain part of the memory, including the person who is usually holding the camera.

Earlier this summer, I got an NS subscription that gave me a discount when travelling outside peak hours.

I booked it for two months, from 14 June to 14 August, mostly as an experiment. I wanted to see whether it would actually be worth it for the way I travel. And, It was.

Every train journey I took during those two months was either off-peak or on the weekend, so I was able to use the discount every single time. But more importantly, it gave me another reason to actually put these little trips on the calendar.

Leeuwarden was the last one.

The subscription might be over, but I don’t think the day trips have to be.

Maybe this becomes a little project: one day trip every month to discover somewhere new in the Netherlands.

Leeuwarden closed the summer. Now, where should I go next?
