Three times the same puddle close to Moerkapelle. Satellites measure 10,500 radiance in 2021, the unit of artificial light at night, above Moerkapelle. In comparison, the maximum in China was 1,300 and New York State 420. Moerkapelle is thereby the spot with the highest amount of artificial light at night in the world.

After sunset, the greenhouses must be closed until midnight. At midnight greenhouses are opened to air the flowers to prevent molt from developing. Each light can go up to 15000 watt, compare that to house hold lights of 25 watt.

Light pollution in the region of Venlo — Limburg, the most southern province of the Netherlands and probably the only one to have crosses at the side of roundabouts. Many rose growers who emit orange hues and several other nurseries that emit pink light. All night shots are taken before the start of blue light, so normally the sky should be dark or stars.

These shots are a part of a long term project on light pollution in The Netherlands.

The Netherlands has the highest level of artificial light at night per square kilometer of any OECD country.

In 2020, satellites measured an average radiance (rad) in the Netherlands of 7 rad with a maximum of 10,596 rad. In perspective, New York state, USA has an average radiance of 2 rad and a maximum of 411 rad.

Artificial light at night affects both humans and animals. Our melatonine hormone levels change, increasing the risk of cancer. As for animals, evolution made them trust the brightness of the day to determine the time of the day.

The highest light pollution is in zipcodes 1101 and 1012. But also 1011, 1016 and 1017 are pretty bad. ⠀

High in the French Pyrenees, far away from the access roads there is the Refuge du Portillon and an artificial lake right next to it. To arrive here, we had hiked 8 kilometers in 10 hours, our slowest day. The first 4 kilometers were fine, but once trail reached boulder fields the trail was gone and we had to find our way through rocks and snow. The next day we had to wait until the snow was a bit melted because we only had micro spikes for grip on the snowy peaks towards Col du Literole. ⠀
All along I carried a big camera to capture these and other shots.

The cirque of Gavarnie France, shot during past summer 20 day hike with a big analog camera.
These shots were taken two days before we started our long hike. We used Gavarnie as our staging area and to get used to the altitude. The day we started hiking a big dense fog hid the entire mountain range.
