Something very special in the works. My Leica M shutter curtains were running low so I commissioned a tool to cut, bend and crimp new shutter curtains. A bit of work to do but we’re almost there. I’ll make a video if the process once we’ve finalized the tool. Fun fact, the guy who made this also makes stuff that gets rocketed into space ;-) .

It’s been a hot minute since my last post, so thought I’d share some pics of a Leica M2 rebuild I did today. This is a standard Leica rebuild, it’s the only type of Leica work I do - no quick fixes or partial repairs. Given the age and the fact that most haven’t been serviced for decades, it makes sense to redo absolutely everything in one go. My standard warranty is 1 year but in most cases you can expect it to go a couple of decades before requiring another service. I’ve been at this for over 30 years and have serviced thousands of Leica Ms and LTMs. I have thousands of parts on hand, including many remanufactured parts which Leica have long since obsoleted.

So there you go. Some tasty pics, and a bit of bumf text ;-)

Forgive me instagram, for I have sinned. It’s been several weeks since my last repair related post.

Repair requests are through the roof, which is great, and I’m investing as much as my ‘free’ time developing new / remanufactured parts & tools - more on that in a later post.

For now, here’s some vids of a Hasselblad 60mm lens shutter overhaul I did yesterday. This is a complete rebuild, and given the age and condition of most of the kit I work on, rebuilds are becoming the norm.

I’m cleaning up / resurrecting my YouTube channel, where I plan to share more long form videos or repairs, start to finish. First up will be the shutter rebuild. These won’t be tutorials, but I will take requests on what you’d like to see next.

Some repairs from the last couple of weeks. I’m on a bit of a bussman’s holiday here in Spain where I have a fully kitted out workshop. Most holiday-maker travel with a suitcase of clothes, but mine was full of broken cameras. ‘Tis a long auld drive from Amsterdam but it’s impossible to fly with 30kgs of cameras and two bikes. 10 days to go before I’m back in Amsterdam when I look forward to returning over 40 freshly serviced cameras to their very patient owners. I’m so very grateful that this job gives me the flexibility to live like this. The work hours are hellishly long but it’s worth it, and I am forever grateful for the ongoing support and patience of my many loyal customers. Thank you all! **t

As of Monday, I’ll stop taking new repairs for a few weeks at least. I can manage about 50 repairs month at most, and that’s with about 70 hours of repairing a week. As you know, the majority of my work focuses on full overhauls, all of which are covered with a 1 year warranty, but expected to last a couple of decades without requiring further work. That level of detail takes time and the ongoing demand has far exceeded my capacity. For context, I get about 80 cameras/lenses a month, all of which need to be inspected, booked in and repaired by yours truly.

I appreciate how fortunate I am to be this busy and I am incredibly thankful to you all for the ongoing support, but I’m running out of space and the admin work is taking up too much time right now.

Thanks all for your understanding and I look forward to another amazing year.

We ain’t no Elon Musk, and this ain’t no rocket s**t. Nonetheless, I’m very proud to announce the new Leica M6 meter circuit, designed and developed in the Netherlands, by yours truly (project manager, ;-)) and a crazy good young Dutch engineer who for reasons of privacy, (and threats), shall remain anonymous.

This is the result of over a years work, muchos dineros, lots of stress (none of which was on my shoulders), plus lots of alcohol (that’s on me), but never a moment of doubt.

I have some working samples ready to ship to a small and important group of trained techs as well as a few up and coming techs whose commitment to the craft has won my admiration and respect.

I also have a private stash which I’m using to repair some friends M6s….. and I have another 10 on hand which I’m open to allocating to my customers on a first “bribe”, first serve basis. If you have a Leica M6 with a dead light meter, then hit me up on email.

Pricing TBC by the end of next week, or thereabouts, but it will be a number that makes sense. A number that returning your M6 from M4 status will comfortably justify …

Here’s a quick FAQ

What is this? it’s a replacement for the long obsolete Leica M6 light meter.
Can I give you all my money now?- yes please
Where can I get one? Right now, just me. It will shortly be available to your local technician who can simply order and install one for you
How much does it cost? - loadsamoney ;-) … pricing TBC but I expect more than 500 and less than 800 to supply and fit.
Is it as good as the original M6 meter? I believe it’s better. It’s a direct replacement, with superior low light performance (allegedly), and other advantages. From a techs perspective, it’s easier when you consider you don’t have to worry about the pigs tail ;-) and calibration is far simpler. Just a few button presses on a calibrated light source and you’re done.
Are you Elon Musk? No, I’m a bit musky, but I’m no Elon.
Can it be fitted to an M2/3/4/TTL? No
Who’s the engineer? None of your business.

As you can tell from this rambling, I’m both very excited and very tired.

Good night, and Long Live the Leica M6!!

Please share wherever you can .. thanks!

We are step closer to finalizing the Leica M6 replacement meter circuit and I’m almost pi*sing myself with excitement. Pre-production samples have landed and the first test fitting is done. We’ll be installing 5 units for some VIPs this coming week, and all going to plan I’ll be sending samples to a small group of experts/ experienced Leica techs for further testing and validation. We don’t expect issues, so these should be available for sale to a small group of partners by late January, and to the wider community early spring 2025. Lots of questions last time about pricing. We’ve put a s**t tonne of time and money into this project , and still have to figure out what the wholesale and retail pricing will be. I can however assure you that it’ll make sense. Thanks all for your interest thus far and please share the good news …
