King’s Day is far more than just a national holiday celebrating King Willem-Alexander’s birthday, it represents the largest and most vibrant street party in the Netherlands. On this day, the entire country literally turns orange, with everything from the outfits of the revelers to the decorations in the smallest villages embracing the national color.

While the Royal Family visits a specific city each year, the rest of the nation transforms into a massive open-air flea market where anyone is allowed to sell their second-hand goods on the street. The atmosphere is defined by a unique blend of tradition such as eating orange-glazed tompouce pastries and playing old-fashioned Dutch games and a modern festival culture featuring massive boat parades through the Amsterdam canals and large-scale music events across the country.
