A great studio portrait isn’t just about having an expensive camera or lens. The way you control and position your light can completely transform the final image.

Here’s a simple 3-light studio setup every photographer should understand:

1. KEY LIGHT
This is your main source of light. It shapes the subject’s face and creates the overall mood of the portrait. Position it around 45° to your subject and adjust the height according to the desired shadow pattern.

2. FILL LIGHT
The fill light controls the shadows created by the key light. It should usually be less powerful than the key so you can maintain depth and dimension without making the image look flat.

3. RIM / BACK LIGHT
Placed behind the subject, this light separates them from the background and creates a beautiful highlight around the shoulders, hair or body.

Learn to understand light direction, intensity, distance, modifiers and shadows, and your photography will immediately start looking more intentional and professional.
