While Ìṣẹ̀ṣe is one, and may simply be understood as “your source,” its sacred expressions are not a single, one-way spiritual path in the manner of the Abrahamic religions.

Within Ìṣẹ̀ṣe are different sacred paths, lineages, ancestral traditions and ritual practices. One example is the procession of sacred bearers, commonly known as Arugbá in traditions associated with Ọ̀ṣun, Yemọja, Ẹgbẹ́ and others, while in Ifá traditions the sacred bearer is distinctly known as Arufá.

The Arugbá or Arufá carries sacred items and intentions in the calabash or traditional container representing prayers, petitions or communal intentions entrusted to the bearer. For easier understanding, this may be compared to how a Catholic priest carries the intentions of a congregation through the monstrance during a festival such as Corpus Christi.

However, the sacredness, requirements and responsibilities of these bearers are not identical across all lineages.

For example, within particular Arugbá Ọ̀ṣun traditions, the bearer may be required to be a virgin. In particular Arugbá Yemọja traditions, the role may instead be entrusted to an Ìyá Àgbà, an elder mother who has completed menstruation. In Ifá rites, an Arufá is devoted to Ifá and comes through an Ifá lineage.

These distinctions are not contradictions. They are expressions of the diversity that exists within Ìṣẹ̀ṣe itself.

One Ìṣẹ̀ṣe. One people. Different paths and practices.

Happy Ìṣẹ̀ṣe Day 2026! 🥳🪔✨

Today, 20 August, we honour and celebrate Yoruba beliefs, culture, and traditional heritage.

We also appreciate the elders whose sacrifices and dedication paved the way for the recognition and celebration of this heritage as a public holiday.

À ṣèyí ṣàmọ́dún! 🙏🏾✨

Someone reacted with an angry face to our last Òrìṣà Nlá invocation.

Well… we’ve decided to make sure we don’t remain the reason for his anger any longer. 😃

We are loving and peaceful people. 🕊️

So, in the interest of peace, I blocked him — before his anger grows into something more than just a reaction. 😌

Àṣẹ!

This Ìwúre is inspired by a verse of Ògúndá Ìká (Ògúndàkáa), where Ifá reveals the victory of Ògún over Àká.

Ẹ̀tìpìrìsìkì
A dífá fún Ògún, Òhun Àká,
Níjọ́ tí wọ́n jọ ṣọ̀tá.

There was a time when Ògún and Àká were enemies.

Whenever Ògún went to war or engaged in business and returned with his hard-earned gains, Àká would intercept him and take everything away.

Àká was a messenger of the Ìyàmi Àjẹ́.

Ògún eventually became weary. He had worked too hard to gather what was continually being taken from him. So, he went to his Babaláwo to seek the guidance of Ifá.

After consultation, he was instructed to perform Ẹbọ with sixteen gourds of water, goats, and a basket belonging to another person.

The Ẹbọ was prepared and performed for Ògún.

Then came the fateful day.

Ògún was returning from one of his expeditions when Àká crossed his path, as he had done many times before, intending once again to take Ògún’s gains.

But this time, the Ẹbọ Ògún had performed removed Àká’s ability to conceal himself. His identity and presence were revealed.

The Odù markings have now been corrected, with the proper titling as Ògúndá Òfún (Ògúndáfún).

What we had last ọ̀sẹ̀ ifá was, in fact, Òfún Ògúndá (Òfúndùnmádé).

Thank you to everyone who pointed it out, and especially to Araba Ayobami Ogedengbe whose clear distinction helped make the difference we hoped others would notice and engage with.

Ifá reads from right to left, like one of the popular spiritual traditions it predates.

That distinction was, in fact, part of the purpose of the post — to encourage observation, conversation, learning, and a deeper appreciation of the intricacies of Ifá. 🌴
