CLARIFICATION TIME: First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has responded to criticism over her earlier comments about supporting akara sellers, saying the Federal Government’s empowerment programmes also benefit tomato, pepper, vegetable and roasted plantain traders.

According to her, the government has provided ₦100 million to support 2,000 petty traders in Jigawa State, with each beneficiary receiving ₦50,000 to help grow their businesses.

“It’s not only akara, we also have tomato sellers… those selling pepper and vegetables for us in the market,” she said, adding that the administration will continue supporting small-scale traders and remains focused on improving livelihoods across the country.

BREAKING: President Tinubu has approved the comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), which will see the agency being led by a civilian in its operational leadership, while the military will continue to handle security for corps members across the country.

Tinubu also directed the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, and the Minister of Youth, Ayodele Olawande, to amend the NYSC Act and its regulations to reflect all the approved reform measures, enabling immediate implementation of the new framework.

Some of the landmark reforms include:

1. A technology-driven call-up process.

2. Risk-sensitive deployment to better protect corps members.

3. A redesigned six-week orientation programme with a stronger focus on leadership, entrepreneurship, digital skills, and specialised career streams.

4. Skills-based primary assignments aligned with academic background and career pathways.

5. Modern governance with civilian operational leadership while the military continues to provide security support.

6. Improved camp standards through a national grading and certification system.

7. A new graduation ceremony to replace the Passing Out Parade, and a redesigned NYSC uniform that reflects professionalism and national pride.

Governor Fubara Withdraws from Rivers APC Governorship Primaries

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has announced his withdrawal from the APC governorship primaries ahead of the 2026 Rivers State gubernatorial election.

In a statement released on May 20, 2026, Fubara said his decision followed extensive consultations with family, friends, and political associates. He explained that he stepped aside in the interest of peace, stability, and unity in Rivers State.

The governor stated that leadership requires sacrifice and stressed that Rivers State is bigger than any personal ambition. He also pledged his support for whoever emerges as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress.

Governor Fubara thanked his supporters for their loyalty and sacrifices throughout the political process and appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his encouragement and support.

He maintained that his withdrawal was not out of fear or weakness but out of conviction and commitment to the peace and progress of Rivers State.

Primaries: APC Reps fight back after ticket losses

APC House of Representatives primaries ahead of the 2027 elections have sparked major controversy across Nigeria, with over 26 serving lawmakers reportedly losing their return tickets amid allegations of imposition, manipulation, violence, and irregularities.

From Rivers to Lagos, Benue, Ogun, Plateau, Ekiti, Imo and beyond, aggrieved aspirants are rejecting results and threatening legal action as internal party tensions continue to deepen.

In Rivers State, the political battle between camps loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike reportedly influenced several disqualifications and outcomes.

Popa Media reports that the primaries have exposed serious cracks within the ruling party as the race toward 2027 intensifies.
