SECOND HALF
I received a message from a friend sometimes ago.
“Can you develop a website?” She asked.
She wanted it done with a particular technology.
Truth is, I had been trying to learn web development with that technology but I hadn’t been able to bring myself to doing so.
I had consoled myself with words like….
“You’re busy.” “You will make out time." “You know you are trying your best."
I had tons of video courses and other resources on this too, but they didn’t automatically helped me in getting the work done.
“When do you need it?” I enquired.
“Very soon.”
“I will do it,” I said.
She needed it done in few weeks.
I took up the challenge because I was sure I could deliver.
I started. I got bugs, of course. I debugged. I got stuck, but I couldn't afford to remain in it, because, the deadline was staring deeply.
I had a steep learning curve. The experience, exasperating, as well as, exhilarating, with leaps of joy for every small win and then I sank again into another bug (O my...).
I even wondered where I found the time. The myth of “no time” dissipated because this project was tied to a timeline.
So, what changed?...
Self-management did happen. I had to reduce my engagements with low-value tasks...
And the no-value tasks, I cast and kept within bounds.
Was I able to complete it in good time?
..Of course!
Phew! I felt an air of accomplishment upon completion. I had surprised myself.
********************************************
I know we sometimes find ourselves in this kind of situation.
We buy video courses (don’t get me wrong, it’s okay to buy video courses – I have bought some too) in the hope that every other thing will fall in line.
We download YouTube videos and other resources, only to realise that unavailability of those materials wasn't our only problems.
Inability to take action, absence of drive to stay committed, self indulgence, amongst others, are too.
"So what is the way out of this rot?"
I knew you would ask.
Some people need more than video courses or books to achieve certain things.
They need stimulants, like, the right environment with the right people who would be willing to work and partner with them.
If you are among this set of people, you will need to get immersed in challenging scenarios.
Take on projects, enrol in bootcamps, do volunteer jobs, go for an internship, even if the pay is very low or non-existent.
Join a group, but beyond this, participate in group activities.
Connect with like-minded people. Get a mentor who will be ready to commit to your cause.
You will be amazed at the things you would learn and actualise if you do the aforementioned.
It’s not over yet. Your dreams are still valid.
- You can, you will, you must.
Welcome to the second half.
The whistle has been blown again.
Run with the ball.
