AKUDAAYA: WHAT AND WHY WE BELIEVE VS LOGIC 🤔
In many Nigerian markets and neighborhoods, you have probably heard this chilling story:
A person dies in one town, but years later, they are spotted alive, healthy, and working in a completely different city.
The legend says these spirits—the Akudaaya—live normal lives, marry, and even have children. But the moment someone from their past recognizes them? They vanish into thin air.
Many people truly believe these stories because they are told by people we trust. But what does calm logic actually tell us? 🧠
When we lose someone suddenly, our hearts are broken. Because of this deep pain, our minds can play tricks on us. When we see a stranger in a crowd who has the same height, walk, or smile as the person we lost, our grieving brain quickly tells us, "That’s them!"
Think about the millions of people in Nigeria. It is incredibly common for two unrelated people to look exactly alike.
When you mix extreme lookalikes with the power of deep grief, a simple mistake in a crowded market easily turns into a big myth that lasts for generations.
The truth? Science and logic tell us that when someone passes away, they do not come back to live a second life in another city. These myths are not real, but they are important. They show how much we love and miss our people. The "magic" is just the human heart trying to hold on to a memory.
