“A man does not stray too far from where his corn is roasting”-African Proverb

Here are some headlines as seen in the Past 24 Hours in Nigerian newspapers: The Punch: “61 years on: Nigeria is broken, needs urgent rescue” Vanguard: “Insecurity: Stop the killings, Pope Francis tells Buhari” Yesterday’s edition of the Punch: “Nigerian actor arrested for selling drugs in India” The Guardian: “Nigerian troops neutralise 85 terrorists” Premium Times: “Insecurity: Reps join Senate, ask Nigerian govt to declare bandits as terrorists” and the list goes on, and on…

It is no news that Nigeria is going through a difficult time that has never been witnessed in her 61 years of existence. All facets of the nation is undergoing one challenge or the other. From the economy, to healthcare to education and security. It’s like there an onslaught on the nation from different angles.

I created this image as part of a project in line with the proverb I began this post with and thought it represents the state of our nation today.

The man in this context is the one protecting the lady on the horse that is being attacked.

Does not stray far from where his corn is roasting is reflected in how close he stays with the horse conveying the woman to her destination while keeping a watchful eye on her

The attacker represents the many issues the nation is grappling with-Insecurity, banditry, kidnapping, corruption, poor healthcare, poverty, inequality, nepotism, bad roads, hunger etc.

This 61st independence day of Nigeria, calls for sober reflection. We must tell ourselves some hard truths. Have we been the best we can be to better the nation? Have we done our own part in ensuring the right people get elected and when they do, we hold them accountable? we should all ensure we stay the course and not stray from where our “corn is roasting”. We must overcome our challenges and let Nigeria flourish and rise to where she belongs.

Who me? Organized? Hahaha, I find it hard to keep track of my weekly schedule. You know: work, school, exercise, grocery shopping, tidying up, cooking, paying bills, remembering appointments and so on. Fortunately, I have these colorful post- it notes that adorn my workspace. Simple. Work, tons of work. The COVID-19 Pandemic came with a shift in the way we do things. It meant we had to stay at home to avoid contracting the virus, and also work. There is currently the convergence of living, doing home chores and also meeting office deadlines.
