Why flying behind a steel water tower triggers an instant mid-air compass switch.

You are scanning the upper tank of a massive steel municipal water tower.

You manually fly around the back side of the tank to complete your 360-degree inspection orbit.

Suddenly, your controller screen flashes red, screaming "COMPASS ERROR - SWITCHING TO ATTI MODE," and your drone starts drifting rapidly sideways in the 15 mph wind toward a tree line.

What just happened?

The massive volume of steel and thousands of gallons of water inside the tower act as a giant magnetic shield, completely blocking GPS satellite signals on the leeward side of the structure.

As the drone passes through this severe magnetic distortion field, its internal magnetometer logic conflicts with its IMU sensors.

The flight controller panics, disables automated GPS position holding, and dumps the aircraft into manual ATTI mode.

If you aren't trained to fly pure manual stick corrections without GPS positioning, the ambient wind will carry your aircraft into an obstacle before you can re-establish satellite lock.

Never fly a multirotor behind massive metal structures where your direct line-of-sight to the satellite constellation is occluded.

Practice manual ATTI stick maneuvers in an open field monthly so you can counter unexpected drift instantly.

A long coronal hole measuring over 1 million km in length is stretching from the southeast quadrant all the way up to the northeast. This opening in the Sun's atmosphere will begin to face our planet later in the upcoming week and should be the source of a high speed solar wind stream past Earth. More updates to follow at that point. Image by SDO/AIA using the 193 angstroms channel.

The future of giraffe conservation is taking flight. 🦒

We recently teamed up with the Namibian Drone Academy at Etosha Heights to put various drone technologies to the test. Our mission? To determine the most effective way to survey giraffe populations here in the reserve and across Africa 🌍.

But we aren't stopping there - stay tuned for more exciting updates later this year! 🛰️🌍
