Clash of the Stripes – Plains Zebra Stallions – Etosha National Park, Namibia, June 2026
Some wildlife photographs are carefully planned, while others are years in the making and depend entirely on being in the right place at the right time.
For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to photograph two zebra stallions engaged in a fight. Despite countless hours spent watching herds across southern Africa, the opportunity had always remained just out of reach. This week in Etosha, that finally changed.
As tensions escalated between two rival stallions, what began as posturing quickly erupted into a brief but intense confrontation. One rearing onto their hind legs, striking with their forelegs, and attempting to bite one another, these battles play an important role in establishing dominance and maintaining access to mares and territory. While dramatic to witness, such encounters are a natural part of zebra society and rarely last longer than necessary.
Photographing behaviour like this is one of the reasons I keep returning to the bush. No matter how many days you spend in the field, wildlife always has the ability to surprise you, and sometimes it rewards years of patience with a single unforgettable moment.
