Meet Haw, the fire behind BFE.
Haw, a husband and father of two, runs the day-to-day operations at Borneo Film Equipment.
Most days, you’ll find him replying to customer enquiries, preparing quotes, recommending the right gear, coordinating fulfilment, crew and making sure every client’s need is taken care of.
Behind the scenes, he maintains the gears , looks for new equipment to add to the arsenal, retires outdated equipment and find new ways to serve more filmmakers and productions.
Before BFE, Haw worked as a video editor, camera operator, film crew and production crew. He freelanced, ventured into F&B in his family business , and eventually found his way back into the film industry.
During the COVID era, Sam approached him about kickstarting an equipment rental business. Haw had never considered that such a business would be feasible, but he decided to give it a shot.
What started as a full-time employment eventually grew into a partnership. Today, Haw is key person moving BFE forward every day.
Haw loves good gear and insisted to add the Aputure 1200X into the inventory because sometimes that extra lighting in a production makes all the difference.
Overtime, he’s learned something important:
“I used to feel the same as many production company and filmmaker out there. I spent hours watching reviews and chasing every latest gear release. But now, I am of the opinion that it’s the stories we shoot n how we telling that matters, beyond the gears you use.”
In Kuching, he believes productions could benefit from embracing more tools such as— EasyRigs, Dana Dollies for movements that feel more organic, rather than chasing perfectly smooth gimbal shots every time.
Don’t chase gears. Chase results.
That’s how Haw wants to help Sarawakian filmmakers in shaping stories through filming equipments.
