Kelly, G.& Donen, S. (Director). (1952). Singin' In The Rain. [Motion picture]. United States: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios.
This film has been in my watch list for so many years since I watched A Clockwork Orange (1972) where the protagonist often sing a song originally from this film.
Classical films as this one may not have technological advantage in cinematography like nowadays. Classical films also tend to use long take, high key lighting setup, rough camera movement and no visual effects other than few chroma keying.
Despite all disadvantages, this film should be one of the best film ever produced, at least, in my opinion. It's all about great acting. The actors act without any flaw even scripts are too long and twisted especially during musical performance. They were able to actively act in long take with forgetting script and no sign of fatigue.
Scripts are packs with punchlines and never once sounds stupid. Mise-en-scene of all parts are all well made and detailed even after high definition restoration have been done, more details can be noticed.
Recent films, some of them are really great, but, acting performance seem to be downgrade from our classical era. I think this is because there too much shots in one scene which it affects actors mood during their acting. I wish more films in future would bring back good old long take film cut, like in a Broadway performance, trust me it would give more impact than action pack performance with endless of fast cut. It will ruin talents creative to be honest.
