April 26th is World Pinhole Day and now I am ready.

The previous DIY film canister pano camera was not satisfactory.

A friend gave me the Gakken pinhole pano camera to assemble. 30 parts with no assembly or use instructions. Took me a couple of hours to complete the camera as got to figure out each plastic part, screws, spring and foam.

The Gakken pano shoots 72x24mm or 1:3 ratio. The Gakken pinhole pano camera is slightly longer than the standard pen. Height and thickness slightly more than the 135mm film canister and weighs in at 127.5gm.

My sample test film is the Shanghai GP3 400 film.

INFORMATION SHARING

Firstly, apologies for the orientation of the photos - it’s for viewing horizontally on your phone.

Even though the XPan or TX-1 only has 3 native lenses, there is also another non native lens you can use with this camera, ie the Nikon 35mm PC lens.

Here are some samples that I shot over the weekend.

The exposures are on a brighter side as I do not have the special centre ND filter.

With this Nikon lens, you can buy just the XPan or TX1 body to start shooting XPan which is a much lower spend.

The Nikon lens allows me to shoot as close as 12 inches.

I use the original viewfinder (edge to edge) of the XPan to frame. The lens is wider than the viewfinder. In the playground photo, for the right side the viewfinder only shows 2 robot men and on the left side half of the black dustbin.

The Nikon lens projects 24x62mm while XPan captures 24x65mm. This is why the edges of these photos are either darker or soft focus.

If you cropped the final photo to match what you see in your viewfinder then the edge issues disappeared.

Hope this can make XPan shooting more affordable.
Of course the body will not be in hundred ringgits but thousands as FUJIFILM only made 23,000 such cameras.

ORPHAN PHOTOS needing your help to find owner

I suspect this roll may be owned by Malaysians and photos shot in Malaysia too.

Photos were taken in 2007 on Konica Centuria 200 with a Yashica point and shoot camera.

The young boy would probably be in his 30s and photo with mom, grandpa and granddad is such a nice thing to have.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION

People, I considered this as a sleeper camera from 1980s.

Sample photos taken with China made generic ASA200 film.

What is so special about this camera is that it’s the only Point and Shoot camera I know that uses Off The Film TTL metering.

Basically this means your photos will always been well exposed even when using flash.

TTL metering is normally found in SLR cameras. Off The Film metering is only found in professional cameras.

The 32mm lens is wider than the 35mm or 38mm lens found in most point and shoot like Nikon 35Ti or Contax T2.

The latest price on eBay is shown.

All photos formatted for Instagram.

Yeah, collected my latest prints taken in my 4th visit to Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad during Chinese New Year week.

I used a 20mm lens to shoot and print pano.

I have included a close up of the print to show you that I have printed slightly beyond the maximum resolution this film roll can handle.

Film grains are used to form film photos and when you see grains then it’s like seeing cell structure in your face, meaning you have printed beyond what the film can handle. Kodak called this print index.

My prints are 86x32cm (near XPan format). And the film I used is a generic ASA200 135 film from China. Shot them at A mode with my Canon F1n at f16 (see starbursts in the close up photo).

NB. Between the two, I like the one with a desert mirage of the city. Posting in handphone orientation)

Yeah got my new “framed pano” back.

When Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad opened on February 2nd 2026, I like many visited it. It was more a recce for me.

I visited again on Thursday and made the usual architectural shots - its dreamy long corridors, the grandest part of the building which is its clock tower and also its beautiful pillars. Inside are many things to see and mini KL is nice.

I took a few wide view shots of mini KL but I felt it wasn’t nice. I noticed mini KL has many lights, so decided to shoot abstract. Haa haa.. the 2 shots I did came out better than I expected. Yeah, I am please with myself.

I decided to frame them pano as I shot them side by side to have all 4 famous tall buildings together.

For those who always want to know the gear used. I was shooting with a 1956 TLR (Rollop Automatic) loaded with the FUJIFILM NPS160 that has expired in 2005. My abstract photos were snapped at around 1.5 seconds f4.
