Hello Datuk Seri! "My name is Kanta Studio, I'm from Jeffrey Lim...." I think that was what i said, I was a little nervous.... Presenting my .studio grant project to Minister of Federal Territories, Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, PNB Director, and many other VIPs... forgot to say most of my lines... but i think it was quite an abstract idea of what a traditional silverprint photography studio is... "Oh macam zaman dulu, P. Ramlee, yang ada flash Asap tu" she said (Oh its like those days, P. Ramlee, with the flash and smoke). "Oh yeah serupa, yang asap tu" nodding my head in agreement (Oh Yeah, exactly, with the smoke) "tapi sekarang sudah ada karan" (but now we already have current /electric)... hahaha....

I applied for this grant about mid last year, this idea of a traditional photo studio is an eventuality I knew I had to pursue. Under the Kreatif KL initiative, of revitalising the city, focusing alot on its creative, cultural and heritage aspect, I was awarded this grant and amazing opportunity to startup this venture. I'm still halfway through my milestones... a few months behind schedule cause of many life's events. But soon I'll have an official launch with some amazing new initiatives I've been planning.

Thank you for the amazing support, the people of Malaysia. I think it would have been impossible on my own, or take a decade to reach where I am today. I would love to reciprocate in gratitude, by making the best portraits I can, and be as accessible as possible.

Only manage to make a couple of portraits, Aiman of Railway ! and Gan from TC. I'm real rusty with the box camera, spoilt by all the better gear I have now.

July Program - a little late in the month to announce, here are the events

5-6th— Petite Photo Studio
19th— Darkroom Workshop
20th— .KL Darkroom Session

Its almost a full month of Darkroom setup .darkroom, I am still restructuring the darkroom modules. Private appointments for portrait session only reconvenes after the 22nd July. Its a busy month at my other workshop as I'm in full swing, restoring some antique equipment.

August will be the month of portraits, with many specials and lead up to Merdeka!

This weekend 5-6 July! — Petite Photo Studio- Instant Portraits Specials

Pasar Seloka Weekend Picnic- PJ Trade Centre

I'll be setting up a mini studio this time, providing an array of split-frames. Back with the IC photo- 4 profile portraits in one print! (in a lead up to Merdeka!) / Double Half-frame / the usual full frame portrait / and my personal favourite- Diptych join prints- two single portraits that join together!

And this time, no bookings, I'm READY for Walk-ins!!!

Some of the prints from today! many father's, soon-to-be, grantfathers, hero fathers. I'm honoured to have all of you sit for your portraits here in my little studio. It is also Hari Raya Haji, special effort made by so many to be here. Thank you for being an event partner.

Coming weekend, 14-15 June, I am having a special session, in honour & memory of my father, I am giving free portrait session to families of three generation, as long as Papa is there. If not a portrait of the deceased would also suffice. Also a special prop, my first bicycle would be present. I've just installed a picture rail, to inspect the finished print. Will prepare the booking form soon with more info

Photo Portrait archive- BEST find so far!

I've been collecting over the years, some samples of different photographic prints, just to have a sample of the photography culture & heritage we have here in Malaysia. One of my favourites are photography paintings, a very unique retouching to the point of being entirely a painting, but it is a photographic print base.

This specimen, the biggest I have now, is by a very good master, colours are bring, layers are thick, details are fine, will study these and many more.

I have been putting together a plan for a Photo Restoration Volunteer Club, to look into deciphering, creating narratives of these prints, restorung & archiving my little collection. It was born out of the necessity of trying to preserve old prints, and another knowledge/ skill-sharing initiative. Anybody like to join the PRV club?

Will eventually have a little physical, on-site exhibition, maybe an online gallery viewing too for those abroad.

JUNE program— Kanta.Studio, traditional black & white silverprint photography studio

Still semi-operational, I'm just getting back to the studio, rescheduled bookings and workshops. This month will see some new additions, with new lights, backdrop, testing new silver material and adding a workshop module too! Father's day is coming up, and to start it off, I'm collaborating with to bring a little prelude this Saturday with a special package shoot.
