Painted Bartender.
Azman Hassan on the set of Mario's film for The Next New Wave. Shot with a Sony A7s in low light.
This photo is mostly unedited, straight from the camera. I like the fact that he nearly looks like a painting, perhaps due to the set design and costume.

"Ling Chee Kang Satu....!"
One of the most iconic sounds in SS15 Subang Jaya, especially familiar to students who frequent the second floor of the Wet Market for affordable and delicious mixed rice. Ling Chee Kang is a cooling beverage, and she yells out the order to the other lady who handles the drinks.
Her name is Dilah, and she had been operating at this stall for more than 20 years, seeing many students come and go. Though I barely spoke to her all these years, she remembered me from my student days in Taylors College 2008. One of the ladies helping her at the stall is her daughter. The owner, a chinese taukeh, thought I was from a newspaper when I took her photo. They're all a friendly, enthusiastic bunch, with amazing food that we can always go to when our wallets are tight.

Asian Mother Syndrome, directed by Jared Lee, is a two part Cantonese short about family, love, and racial diversity, with Chinese New Year as its backdrop. Featuring an ensemble cast, Joseph Germani, Geena Tsau, Marianne Tan, Shafaren Hamid, Lionel Koh, Kylie Ric Ciely, Jared Lee, Alam Tan, Thando, Ann Wong and Azman Hassan, each episode presents two points of views between mother and son, taking place across two time periods. With music scored once again by Nick Davis, and cinematography by XJun Chua, GRIM FILM presents to you our CNY offering for 2015. Please share this around with your friends and family!

Standing at attention. Some of you might find this man familiar, or maybe know him but not his name. This is Mr Berhan, one of HELP Uni's most recognisable security guards. He's always friendly, and brings a warm presence. I've seen him around since 2009, and in 2010 I once caught him singing to himself. He's got a cool husky voice. Since I started the Portrait albums back in late 2011 I always thought of one day taking a photo of him - he was always shy and not ready. While I was going to hop on the bus to the Main Block for a film casting session, I saw him sitting at the desk in front of KPDA. I whipped out my camera. This time he was ready.

Some time ago I said I wanted to try directing a mainstream-ish drama film and a music video. It took me a while after completing this video to realise that for this Christmas, that's exactly what I got, in a two-in-one package.

Making this video in a short span of time for Christmas has been an incredible experience; a time of learning, enduring certain hardships (including weather, sleep) and an amazing race against time.

is an original song by Vince Chong and Daniel Veerapen, who had given us the opportunity to turn it into a music video. Featuring talents Joseph Germani and Alicia Tan Aan Li, and a special appearance by Marianne Tan and Jared Lee, it's a story of a man's journey home to spend time with his loved one.

With a crew inclusive of Jynn Looi the Make Up Artist, Cindy Ng, Edrei Khoo, Samantha Keo, Damian Kok, and others, this video is our collective effort; gift-wrapped in wonderful cheese, referential cliches and Canto-Koreanesque packaging, placed under every virtual Christmas Tree for the rest of the world. Merry Christmas everyone!
