LOB diving at BandaSea, Indonesia
On board Amaya Explorer
This year has been a relatively quiet year of diving for me. But out at sea especially on a LOB is still previous time to get away, relax and chill
My first time with Amaya Explorer and I must say the boat and the crew r good. English with the DM’s no issue. Malay with the crew also no issue
We dive from a small dinghy, negative descent so be ready for it. Getting up a small dinghy can be somewhat a challenge lol so be ready for that too
What’s the main attraction of Banda diving - hammerhead sharks, but more particularly its spectacular arrival in schools of 50+. Hmmmm I’m sorry to say but we didn’t see that. We mostly saw singles and the biggest school was around 6 of them. And they r deep. I’d say downwards of 40+ meters

I liked this pic as it just reminds me that the underwater world is full of richness and we should admire it without undue duress to the marine life
Pictures are great, we r mostly doing it and we do it at a safe non-harming distance, much like this photographer is
Enjoy diving guys and let’s keep our oceans clean and unharmed for the future generations

School of Jacks running for their lives
So, we were photographing this school of Jacks in Sipadan South Point with the usual guardian Trevally swimming around it
All of a sudden, the Trevally made a lunge for the Jacks. It’s meal time !!
They sprinted right through my friend in the thick of it. The sound they made wooshing through the water was fantastic, and a little heart pounding lol
I shot at a relatively low ss, 1/125 and was about to step down for some low ss pans when this suddenly happened. Kinda lucky to still catch a little speed pan and the divers in it to show its relative speed

Belongs to family of Scorpaenidae
Also known as Leaf or Paper Scorpionfish
As gentle as they seem or look, the leaf fish is an ambush predator feeding on crustaceans or fish
If you see one, there is likely another one or two nearby
Small in size, growing to approx 11cm
Shot in Sipadan at approximately 15 meters depth

I was hovering just above a port hole to look for something interesting. There r so many nooks and crannies in a wreck to shoot. Always pay attention to them
Literally just setting my cam when this lil fella swam right past. Kinda lucky lol
I did intend to use the hole as a frame but also lucky that the fish just swam by at the right moment
2 strobes used, one to illuminate the hole and one angled inwards to illuminate whatever was down there

How bout some jumping in shots
I wanted to capture people doing giant strides entering the water.
Way wayyyy trickier than expected with the bubbles mixing in with the face on entry
Happy I caught these 2. Preset the camera in anticipation then jumping in first to get ready. In a place like Maldives where surface current is fast and more or less doing negative descents, this doesn’t leave much time
Shot settings iso160, f5, ss1/200 to freeze the bubbles around him

The majestic and ‘ginormously’ huge tiger shark
Many people have said the tiger zoo at Formulah Maldives is ‘cheating’. Well let’s not get into that. I’m just here to admire its aura and how magnificent they are.
It certainly gets the heart pumping when so close to them but just remain calm otherwise your heartbeat will literally attract them
Shot without strobes as it apparently annoys them. We def don’t want that

On board Odyssey by Maldives Pleasure
My umpteen time diving with them and have always enjoyed the LOB and the DM’s. Not trying to upsell or anything lol
Kinda chuffed with this shot as I’ve always struggled getting any decent over under pics
My focus and exposure was on the over subject, with both strobes firing at max power, roughly 3 meters from the group. Difficulty also comes stabilising the shot as the rig is heavy out of water so kinda - shoot away and pray 🙄
