I didn’t think a cafe brunch centred around sandwiches could leave me this satisfied… but .sg proved me wrong. ✨ They do sandwiches by day and pizzas by night, and everything we had for brunch was SO satisfying.

The Breakfast Sandwich was my favourite - cheesy scrambled eggs, maple hash brown and maple bacon tucked between fluffy, buttery shokupan. And don’t sleep on the Patty Melt either! A juicy wagyu patty with caramelised onions and gruyere sandwiched between shokupan. Simple but seriously good. Also, I had to try their famous French Toast too, which I’ve seen everyone raving about. And I can see why… I don’t think I’ve had French toast this moist and custardy. Properly soaked through, soft and almost melts in your mouth 🤤 Tho it gets jelak after a while so best to share this dish.

Ordered a matcha latte, which was actually pretty good, and I really enjoyed the vibes and service here too. Definitely leaving properly stuffed and very happy. 🙌🏻

A dessert I’ll always come back to 🍧✨

I first fell in love with the Mango Sticky Rice Bingsu when I tried it at Cheevit Cheeva in Chiang Mai, and ever since, I find myself wanting to order it whenever I spot a Cheevit Cheeva in another city or country.

This time at , I tried their Shokupan Pandan Sang-Ka-Ya Bingsu and I think I love this even more! 🤭 The pandan kaya and soft shokupan is such a good combo. The pandan kaya is fragrant without being overly sweet, while the ice is incredibly fluffy. While I’d love to try the other flavours too, I’m afraid I might just stick to these two favourites for now because they’re so good. 💚

Dim sum feast in Penang 🥢💛

Finally made my way to for a proper dim sum feast! After being seated, you can order ala carte dishes like noodles and other mains from the menu, then head over to the front counter where the dim sum is freshly displayed in steaming baskets. Simply tell the staff what you want, pick up your baskets and bring them back to your table. I love this whole walk up and pick your own dim sum experience! And don’t forget to drop by the next display counter for their selection of pastries and baked treats, especially the egg tarts ✨

We went all out with a table full of dim sum, including har gow with plump prawns, curry siew mai (I love this!), steamed dumplings and more. Everything is best enjoyed hot and fresh, with a pot of Chinese tea on the side. Another favourite was the salted egg york custard buns 🥹 Soft, fluffy buns with a rich, creamy salted egg custard filling that oozes out when you tear into them.

Love this casual dim sum experience that’s perfect for coming with a group so you can order and share a little bit of everything. 🥢

Coffee, cake, and slow afternoons at one of Penang’s coolest hidden cafe corners ☕✨

Tucked away inside Hin Bus Depot, .kopi is the perfect spot to escape the heat after exploring the Sunday market. The space has a nostalgic, laid-back charm that makes you want to slow down and linger over a good cup of coffee. The highlight for me was definitely their signature Egg Kopi. Rich, creamy and velvety with a thick, frothy cream sitting on top of a bold kopi base, it was smooth, fragrant and well-balanced. Don’t leave without trying their butter cake! It had a lightly crisp exterior while staying soft, buttery and fluffy inside. Simple, comforting and the perfect pairing with a cup of coffee.

If you’re planning to spend a Sunday browsing Hin Bus Depot Market, Nui Kopi is the ideal pit stop to recharge before continuing your stroll.

One of Penang’s most popular cafes, .micro.roastery has a beautiful space with soaring ceilings, plenty of natural light and an airy ambience that makes it perfect for a slow brunch. ✨

My favourite dish of the meal was definitely the Norm Shakshuka. It comes with an organic poached egg, chorizo, mushrooms and chickpeas baked in a warmly spiced tomato sauce, served alongside their housemade focaccia. The tomato sauce was rich, hearty and packed with flavour, while the runny egg tied everything together beautifully. The fluffy housemade focaccia tho was what made the dish even more special! It was perfect for mopping up every bit of the sauce and easily made the dish even better.

On the other hand, the Smokey Honey Fried Chicken Waffle was my least favourite. The menu describes the buttermilk-brined chicken tenders as extra crispy, but ours didn’t really have that crispy texture at all 🤔 The waffles were also soft throughout without the crisp exterior I personally enjoy.

The Smoked Chilli Jam Scrambled Eggs with bacon was a comforting brunch plate with creamy scrambled eggs, smoky bacon and a subtle sweet-spicy chilli jam that added a nice kick, while the Conchiglie with Seasonal Mushrooms comprises hearty seashell pasta tossed with sautéed seasonal mushrooms, egg yolk and parmesan.

Brunch with a Korean-Japanese twist at .sg ✨ This cosy little cafe serves up a mix of comforting rice boxes, ramen, somen and Japanese-inspired bites, paired with some really enjoyable drinks.

One of their signatures is the GUI’s Signature Dosirak Ricebox 🍱 - served in a traditional gold-tinted lunchbox that’s meant to be given a good shake before eating! Inside, you’ll find rice, a sunny-side-up egg, Korean premium seaweed, luncheon meat and stir-fried kimchi pork. Everything gets mixed together into a comforting meal with a nice balance of savoury flavours.

We also tried the Creamy Rose Somen with grilled prawns. The sauce was creamy with a noticeable spicy kick, though I felt the flavour profile leaned a little one-dimensional. The Grilled Beef Ramen featured tender, well-grilled beef slices, while the Korean chapagetti-style ramen was slightly milder in flavour than I had expected. One dish I’d happily order again was the GUI’s Tamagoyaki ✨ The lightly sweet and savoury Japanese-style omelette layered with mentaiko mayo was simple but well executed. The Ika Geso was an addictive snack - crispy fried squid tentacles served with mayo and a squeeze of lemon.

As for the drinks, I love the Signature Dalgona Honeycomb Coffee! It was fragrant, creamy and pleasantly sweet, while the Summer Peach Soda was fruity, light and refreshing.

A must-try dessert spot in Penang 🍧✨ serves up a huge variety of traditional Chinese desserts alongside a selection of bingsu.

My favourite was the Tau Hua with Black Sesame Paste & Tangyuan 🖤 Silky-smooth tau hua paired with a rich, creamy black sesame paste and chewy tangyuan. The combination of textures was so good and the sesame flavour was wonderfully fragrant.

We also tried the Pandan Tau Hua with red beans and taro balls. The fragrant pandan tau hua pairs nicely with the sweet red beans and chewy, bouncy taro balls for a lovely mix of textures.

And of course, we couldn’t leave without trying their Milo Bingsu 🍫❄️ - a fun, chocolatey option to cool down with in Penang’s heat. It’s a favourite for my little one too!

Hidden gem in the heartlands ✨ I’ve been meaning to visit for the longest time, and finally made my way down to this cosy cafe tucked away in Tampines Changkat Community Club. It’s been around for a while, but somehow only got around to visiting now, and it was surprisingly crowded even on a weekday afternoon!

The Buttermilk Hotcakes were a highlight and definitely as good as they say 🥞 Inspired by the fluffy American-style diner pancakes, these are yeasted hotcakes with a soft, almost cakey interior, a beautifully browned crust and subtle ye**ty notes. The pancakes paired so well with the housemade maple butter honey syrup and slab of butter, giving that lovely mix of buttery, sweet and slightly salty flavours. Super fluffy, fragrant and indulgent without being overly heavy. Tip: just get the double stack!

But surprisingly, what I really loved was also the toasted brioche from the Build Your Own Breakfast platter. Added some whipped butter, spread it all over and it was SO GOOD. 🤤 Fluffy inside with a slight toastiness and such a fragrant buttery aroma. I was eating it straight off the plate without stopping, something I would almost never do 😂

They also have a good selection of savoury pastries such as the Smoked Duck, Caramelised Onion & Pain au Suisse and Potato, Sour Cream & Fried Shallots Danish. Didn’t have more stomach space for their bakes but it just means a revisit in future. Overall, I really love this place! A cosy neighbourhood spot that feels like a proper hidden gem despite how crowded it gets.

A nostalgic Nanyang-style kopitiam that’s worth adding to your Penang food list. 🇲🇾✨

Tucked away in a century-old shophouse, brings old-school charm to life with vintage décor, red lanterns and a cosy retro ambience that instantly transports you back in time. It feels like stepping into a classic Malaysian coffee shop, but with a refreshed menu that blends tradition with a modern touch.

We started with their fragrant Nasi Lemak, served with blue pea coconut rice and wonderfully crispy, juicy rempah chicken. The Claypot Lou Shu Fun was another favourite - Smoky with a satisfying wok hei aroma, topped with a runny egg that coats every bite. For something lighter, the Kaya Waffles were crisp on the outside yet fluffy inside with a generous kaya filling, while the Kaya Butter Toast delivered that nostalgic combination of fragrant kaya and butter between perfectly toasted bread.

To complete the meal, pair everything with their rich and nostalgic Iced Hor Ka Sai, or go for the refreshing Iced Jasmine Boba Milk Tea if you’re in the mood for something lighter.

My favourite bowl of Hokkien Mee in Penang. 🦐🍜

I know taste preferences vary, but this is personally my benchmark for Penang Hokkien Mee (Prawn Noodles). Every time I’m back, this is one bowl I have to return for.

The rich, umami-packed prawn broth is what got me hooked. It has such a deep, sweet prawn flavour that’s incredibly satisfying, with a subtle hint of spice that gently lingers. Ordered 面加米粉 (yellow noodles + bee hoon) for the best of both textures, and every mouthful just hits the spot. Pair it with their iced milk tea, which is wonderfully smooth, creamy and fragrant. It’s honestly the perfect pairing to a hot bowl of noodles, especially in Penang’s sweltering weather.

You can also opt to add loh soup (卤汁) into the prawn broth. I tried both versions, but I personally prefer the original prawn soup. The loh soup tends to overshadow the rich prawn flavour and masks the subtle spicy aroma that I enjoy so much.
